Hi. My grandmother is Charlotte's niece. Her mother and Frank Shive were brother and sister. I have been looking for history as I have heard many stories about Charlotte the aerialist who hung from her teeth, so I really appreciate your articles.

Christine,
I'm working on another article about Charlotte and her relationship to the Ubangis on the circus. In fact it has just been published. Here's a link: http://www.worthpoint.com/article/circus-fraternity-friend-charlotte-ubangis

Wanda,
The lion you describe was probably a prize from a midway game. While circuses had games of chance they are more often found on carnivals.

Larry,
In my submission earlier I mentioned Carnival Glass.

An additional note referencing Circus goods:
My Dad gave me a figure of a Lion he had obtained from
a Circus. I do not know the exact measurements, but
if memory serves me correctly, it is appoximately 4-5
inches in horizonal length and near 3" hgt., whitish
and contains alum (I believe).
Having been displaced from my home due to disasters of
hurricanes Katrina, Gustav and Ike, I do not know the
whereabouts of the lion figure at this time, or if I
even have it at all.
If you have any knowledge of such type figure, could
you be so kind as to advise me?

Lovely to have a love story in Worthpoint.
Circus is a household word amongst millions, is my guess.
It particular it awes myself in that it was related by some
of my paternal relatives, as well as my father that some family members had preformed in circus'. Names and/or locations are unknown to myself.
However, it is well known that I have been exposed to the
Carnival language (Carney/Carnie) for the majority of my
71 years of life.
Having learned said language from my Dad, I loved it and
began speaking...oops...actually learned by singing a song
in Carney. My 7 siblings learned to understand the language
but only one sister learned to speak it, not very well but
understandable.
I taught my five daughters to understand same, and a couple
try to speak same.
Eons jettisoned, from my birth-year of 1938 until approximately 1977/8 before I ever heard anyone outside of
my family who recognized the language I was speaking. That
waitress informed that she had worked in a circus but she
had not learned the language.
Much later a songstress artist's voice uttered the words of
"Kiss me" in the Carnival language.
Lastly, the third time, A television program had a lady who
had not ever known her parent(s), I believe both, and was searching for he and/or she. Interviewing a somewhat eldery
black gentleman at a carnival, that man began educating her
about the language, speaking some words during the lesson.
Thus, you see, Carnivals, Circus' and the Carnival Glass
really are of interest to me. Wishing that I would have
at least one of the Glasses that Dad had when I was growing
up.
Thank you for the article, loving your work much. Well
appreciated.
