Dear Laura,
I have a swan decoy signed by Ron Vick. It is 28" long and 17" high. I thought it was a wooden-ribbed decoy with stretched canvas, but from I've been reading, perhaps it is a wire frame. Can you share any information with me regarding Mr. Vick or perhaps any info on the decoy. If needed, I can also send a picture. This swan is one of my favorite treasures and I would love to learn more about it. It is beautiful.
Thank you very much,
Mike Clarke

I have acquired a canvas over wire Mallard decoy with a solid wood head. The signature on the bottom is Ron Vick (possibly "Vice"). It is #431. Any information will be appreciated.

Laura:

Nice series of articles on collecting decoys. There are many good reference books on decoys. The definitive one on Mason decoys is the one my co-author (Alan G. Haid) and I wrote in 1993 and updated and expanded in 2003 called, "Mason Decoys-A Complete Pictorial Guide." Copies are available on our website--www.rjgantiques.com.

Thanks.

Dear Chris,
Glad you liked the article. There is a book on Mason Factory decoys, Mason Decoys, A Hillcrest Publication, 1974; a book where Mason's are prominently mentioned, Factory Decoys of Mason, Stevens, Dodge, and Peterson, by John and Shirley Delph, 1980; Decoys of the Mississippi Flyway by Alan G. Haid. There is also a book on the Illinois River decoys I have mislaid. I'll get back to you on that one. I will be posting an article soon on the Factory Decoys.
Thanks

Laura,

Very nice article. I live in the Midwest. Are there any books you'd recommend on Midwest decoy carvers? Thanks.
