Catine - If you can send me some clear photos of the sideboard I will be happy to tell you what I can. I do not charge for my service. You can send clear photos to me as .jpg files at info@furnituredetective.com. Please send the photos directly to me as .jpg files. DO NOT put them in an online photo album. Be sure to include a copy of your original inquiry so I can match them up or I will not respond.
Thanks

Don - Here is the description gum by Alden Wood ID (http://woodid.homestead.com/files/GENERA.htm)

" Red Gum or Sweet Gum (Liquidambar/Hammelidaceae) contains 3 to 4 species that grow in North America (1) and Central America, southwest Asia, eastern China and Taiwan. All species look alike microscopically."

On my websight, I have a Georgian Sideboard that has extraordinary workmanship
a fine reproduction, as I was told years ago by Editor of Antiques Magazine.
On the back the signature is Company of Craftsman with an eagle on it.
How much would it cost to evaluate it?
Thank you,
Catine E. Perkins

Mr. Taylor,

I had always been under the impression that "gum" was a type of eucalyptus, but they would have originally come from Australia. I planted liquid amber trees in the backyard of my old house with no idea that they were "gum" trees. I used to own an apartment building in Long Beach, Ca. with beautiful exposed woodwork that I was told was "gum". The building was in the California Spanish style and built in the teens or '20s thus fitting your explanation of the period of usage.

Thanks,

Don
