I recently acquired some items from a family. They stated that the items were from a Richard B. Shepard and that he had been a navy seal hard hat diver during the Vietnam war. The items included a black beret with a special forces patch, his divers manual with his name written on the cover, a wooden plaque with a bronze applique with a picure of a hard hat diver and the term "HOIST - RS40" on the applique and his watch, which is a Seiko automatic chronograph.

The plaque I am assuming is from his time aboard the USS Hoist salvage vessel.

I'm curious how I go about finding out if he was really a Seal and have searched the internet to no avail. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you,
Dan McCreedy
