The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 01/16/2013

Captain America #3 (Alex Maleev Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of Lists of new comics are courtesy of and Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

It’s almost new comic day again and that means it’s time to do your homework! I know what I’m picking up this week, do you? Watch for more Death of the Family storyline, the final issues of three different titles, and two new under-hyped series. Over at Marvel, the Now titles continue to sell out before shipping so make sure your pull-files are updated. And, Wolvie makes his Marvel Now debut this week. Also, Black Beetle gets his own mini at Dark Horse and Image gives readers a look at the ugliest kid on Earth.

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Jan. 16, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Conan Volume 12 Throne of Aquilonia TP, $19.99. Collecting Conan: Road of Kings #7-#12.

Insurgent #1 (of 6), $2.99. This mini-series is not based on the popular Veronica Roth novel series; it’s something entirely different and has nothing to do with the rest of the DCU. Insurgent is set in a near dystopic future where the U.S. government has used sleeper agents with nano-tech to defeat terrorism. In true DC fashion, there’s no preview out there and not much press either. Good luck, Insurgent.

Legion Lost #16 (Final Issue), $2.99
Ravagers #8, $2.99
Suicide Squad #16, $2.99
Superboy #16, $2.99
Team 7 #4 (Tyler Kirkham & Batt Regular Cover), $2.99

Threshold #1 (Howard Porter & John Dell Regular Cover), $3.99. Again, new series from DC (set in the Cosmic DCU) written by Keith Giffen with no preview. Come on, DC! How are we supposed to get excited here?

Threshold #1 (Kenneth Rocafort Variant Cover), 1:100, ($35-$40) A 1:100 seems pretty optimistic for DC here. I don’t see retailers going nuts over a new cosmic title by Keith Giffen starring Larfleeze in the back-up story. And, maybe I’m way off here, but are those Wetworks characters in this variant?

Hi i want to buy the wolverine #1 frank cho 1:50 that has been signed and graded how much would it cost me ?

    Kind regards

  • I’m going to need some more info before I can give you a reasonable price to shoot for.

First: which Wolvie #1 are we talking about here. There’s been a bunch but if you give me the year it came out I can narrow it down.

Second: What grade are we talking and who graded it? Is this one of the CGC graded 9.8 condition copies?

Third; (and this might sound dumb but…) who signed it? I assume it’s Frank Cho, but companies like Dynamic Forces often have other creators sign graded comics.

Answer these and I can help you out.

    9.8 grade

  • I’m guessing you’re talking about Savage Wolverine #1 (Marvel,2013). There were several different covers and quite a few of them out there signed by artist/writer Frank Cho. Unslabbed you can pick one up for under $10 and slabbed in 9.8 you should be able to find one for under $40. Don’t pay more because there’s no shortage of these.

    Hope this helps.
