The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 03/20/2013

Popeye #11 (Cover RI Mitch O’Connell), 1:10, ($6-$8). I’m a big O’Connell fan but I don’t remember Olive Oil having this much meat on her bones.

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. Lists of new comics are courtesy of Previewsworld.com and Comiclist.com. Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

New comic day hits with a vengeance this week with a ton of great stuff to choose from. Starting with the return of Drew Hayes Poison Elves from Ape, a story about the daughter of Han Solo at Dark Horse. John Constantine joins the regular DCU with a new series, Chuck Dixon and Paul Gulacy return to G.I. Joe, the X-Termination begins at Marvel and Planet Death begins in the pages of XO-Manowar. Is there a better day of the week than Wednesday?

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, March 20, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. 1. Eric Miller says:

Too many variants these days… doesnt anyone remember the mid to late 1990’s?

  2. nillyville says:

Unless its a great artist, and a truly moving/inspired variant cover…I think it truly is a waste to invest (if that’s what people are doing) in these variants. A lot of them just go to the half price bin afterwards. IMO purchase a variant if you really really love it. In my experience, a variant cover always receives initial interest, as the value quickly increases, and then stabilizes or decreases as the variant is forgotten. Fanboys usually have a short attention span to focus onto a newer variant. Just my opinion anyway. Matt, I’ve noticed you’re columns are now exclusively variant focused…is there a reason you don’t comment on a general speculations anymore? I would love to get those back!
    Thanks,
    Nillyville

    • Matt Baum says:

Hey Nilly, couldn’t agree more. That’s why I try to suggest reasonable prices on the variants, and I admit, I write about them more than I’d like too. Unfortunately, there isn’t much info on them out there so I’m trying to remedy that. I am trying to write more general speculation (East of West, for example this week) but yeah, I’ll make an effort to get into more. What do you think of the updates on the second prints where I mention what first prints are selling for?

      Thanks for the advice.
