The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 03/30/2011

by Matt Baum (03/30/11).

American Vampire #13 (Sean Murphy Variant Cover) 1:10

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by WorthPoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics and back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from the Overstreet Guide to Comics (OVST), Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. The codes under the prices of new titles discussed are Diamond Comics order codes that can be used to help your local comic retailer in ordering the issues discussed.

New Comics Roundup

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, March 30. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. To find a comic shop near you, click here.

Variant Watch

Here’s a list of all the variants shipping from Diamond this week and some info on the hot ones. The variant Ratios (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many of the regular issues the retailer has to order to receive one of the variants. If a ratio is not included it’s because I couldn’t get the information or because the variant is a new printing. The prices I post here are suggested, reasonable prices, based on the ratios and may be higher or lower at your comic shop.

DC:

American Vampire #13 (Sean Murphy Variant Cover) 1:10

I love this variant. Sean Murphy is an amazing penciling talent (check out his Joe the Barbarian series for more of his work). American Vampire is a good seller (typically, the title sells just out of the top 100 and sells much better in trade form) but don’t expect to see piles of this Vertigo comic. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag

Green Arrow #10 (Tyler Kirkham and Batt Variant Cover) 1:10

Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #8 (Tyler Kirkham & Batt Variant Cover) 1:10

Green Arrow #10 (Tyler Kirkham and Batt Variant Cover) 1:10
Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #8 (Tyler Kirkham & Batt Variant Cover) 1:10

This one shocked me. I have to admit I’m not a big fan of the titles penciler, Tyler Kirkham, so when I heard he was given the variant covers of both these titles, I didn’t expect much. To my surprise, they’re both really good looking variants and The GL Emerald Warriors one could be part of a pretty hot “War of the Green Lanterns” set. All the War of the GL’s variants should be pretty easy to find seeing how heavily the main title is ordered and the popularity of the crossover. Watch for $6-$8 price tag on both
.

Wonder Woman #609 (Alex Garner Variant Cover) 1:10

Wonder Woman #609 (Alex Garner Variant Cover) 1:10

Make that three great variants from DC this week, counting the Alex Garner Wonder Woman #609 variant. This is Garner’s eighth Wonder Woman variant in a row and they’ve all been just gorgeous. I’ve liked Garner’s work in the past but can’t remember him painting like this. More please! Watch for a $6-$8 price tag.

DYNAMITE:

Green Hornet Year One #9 (Matt Wagner Black & White Incentive Cover) 1:15

Speculator Picks of the Week

These are comics that could sell out very quickly due to conservative ordering, popular demand, shipping errors or even mobs looking for some payback on Ebert, Vegas, Meta-Critic and just about every other Oscar prediction site that left them broke after screwing up their Oscar pools. Pick them up while you can or pay too much for them later . . .

Amazing Spider-Man #657

Amazing Spider-Man #657

MARVEL

Written by DAN SLOTT
Pencils by MARCOS MARTIN & HUMBERTO RAMOS
Cover by MARCOS MARTIN

Solicitation: A “Three” tie-in!
Following up on the shocking ending to February’s issue of
Fantastic Four, Spider-Man visits the FF for a very
private wake-just for family.

40 pages
$3.99
JAN110724

Why it’ll go fast: OK, I know it’s easy to call that Amazing Spider-Man will sell out when it’s been doing so for months, but this issue is going to sell out even faster. This issue ties-in to the Fantastic Four “Three” storyline which saw the death of the Human Torch. This is where we’ll see how Peter deals with the death of his friend and how he gets invited to join the Future Foundation. All this and it’s drawn by the amazing Marcos Martin. I can’t wait to read it.

Butcher Baker #1

Butcher Baker #1

IMAGE COMICS
Written by Joe Casey
Art by Mike Huddleston

Solicitation: Maybe you’ve seen the PR; now read the comic book! At one time, Butcher Baker was the preeminent, All-American superhero. Now he’s . . . getting laid. A lot. But one last mission could signal his return to glory, and now he’s back on the blacktop! It’s a balls-out, surreal super-epic from creators Joe Casey (Gødland, Ben 10) and Mike Huddleston (The Coffin), and it starts right here!

32 pages
$2.99
JAN110547D

Why it’ll go fast: Joe Casey writes great comics that are unlike anything else out there. If you’re looking for a cosmic-psychedelic-pop-culture-romp, you can’t go wrong with his other Image title Gødland. I’m guessing this one will be under-ordered because it’s a mature title, but when fans of Dynamite’s The Boys and Caseys loyal followers get a hold of this one, first-printings will b e very hard to find. As of writing this #1 is already sold out. Get to your shop early or you will not find Butcher Baker #1.

Undying Love #1

Undying Love #1

IMAGE
Written by TOMM COKER & DANIEL FREEDMAN,
Art & Cover by TOMM COKER

Solicitation: A horror-action tale, equal parts vampire mythology and Chinese folklore, set in modern day Hong Kong. Ex-soldier John Sargent has fallen for a beautiful Chinese woman named Mei. The only thing keeping the star-crossed lovers apart: Mei’s a vampire. To free Mei from the curse, Sargent sets out to destroy the vampire that made her. The only problem: Mei was turned by one of the most powerful vampires in history . . .

32 PGS./Rated T+
$3.99
JAN110838

Why it’ll go fast: Yet another Image #1 that sold out before it shipped. I feel guilty writing about stuff like this because it’s already gone but, I guess you can consider this a heads up. Go pick up Undying Love #1 because as of Thursday it’ll be gone. This one’s got it all; vampires, desperate love and of course, Hong Kong. What more could you possibly need? Maybe mad pre-ordering skills seeing as most retailers aren’t going to order enough of these.
