The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 05/23/2012

by Matt Baum (05/22/12).

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser #14 (Cover C Tim Bradstreet)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of Lists of new comics are courtesy of and Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

Welcome back! You nerds seem to be enjoying the new format, so it looks like I’ll be sticking with it. This week we can expect a new Bat-series, an ongoing True Blood series, a series finale, a gay proposal/wedding and the return of another Marvel Captain. Who knew a Wednesday in mid-May could be so exciting?

One side note before we get started; I just want you guys to know I’m always available for your comic questions. Lately, a few readers have been hitting me up via e-mail and Twitter and they always start with an apology. Never apologize for asking me a question! I eat, sleep and breath comics and love to talk about them, always.

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, May 22, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Clive Barker’s Hellraiser #14 (Cover A Tim Bradstreet), $3.99
Clive Barker’s Hellraiser #14 (Cover B Nick Percival), $3.99

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser #14 (Cover C Tim Bradstreet), 1:15. Bradstreet’s virgin variants (“virgin” means no title on the cover) continue to sell well at $10-$16 each and probably because there aren’t a lot of shops ordering the 15 copies necessary to get one. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag.

Absolute Batman Dark Victory, $99.99

All-Star Western #9 (Night Of The Owls), $3.99. This comic sells just a little better than Batwing and might be the second-hardest Night of the Owls tie-in to find. That said, none of the Owls tie-ins appear to be doing much yet.

Aquaman #9 (Other League Part 3)(Ivan Reis & Joe Prado Regular Cover), $2.99
Aquaman #9 (Ivan Reis & Joe Prado Black & White Variant), 1:25

Batman #3 (Greg Capullo 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. First-printings here are selling for $5 and seem to be going up fueled on the Owls buzz.

Batman Incorporated #1 (Chris Burnham Regular Cover), $2.99. Grant Morrison brings his Batman, Inc. storyline to the new 52.

Batman Incorporated #1 (Combo Pack Edition), $3.99. Ships bagged with free digital download code.

Batman Incorporated #1 (Chris Burnham Black & White Variant)

Batman Incorporated #1 (Frank Quitely Variant Cover)

Batman Incorporated #1 (Chris Burnham Black & White Variant), 1:200. Don’t pay more than $70 here. The DC 1:200s continue to drop in price and I don’t see Burnham’s breaking that pattern. I do love his art though.

Batman Incorporated #1 (Frank Quitely Variant Cover), 1:25. If you’re going to buy one Batman Inc. variant,/ make it this one. It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from Quietly so I’m guessing this one goes fast. And for good reason, Frank Quietly is one of the best Bat-artists working today.

Batman Knightfall Volume 2 Knightquest TP (New Edition), $29.99

Batman The Dark Knight #9 (Night Of The Owls)(David Finch & Richard Friend Regular Cover), $2.99. Judd Winick jumps on to write this Owls tie-in.

Flash #9 (Francis Manapul Black & White Variant Cover), 1:200. Same rules as the 1:200 Bat-variant. Watch for a $70 price tag.

Flash #9 (Tony S. Daniel Variant Cover)

Flash #9 (Tony S. Daniel Variant Cover), Retailers could order this variant based on their lowest-ordered relaunch #9 title for this week (it’s gotta be Firestorm). It’s a very cool Flash by Tony Daniel but I still wouldn’t recommend paying more than cover price.

Fury Of Firestorm The Nuclear Men #9, $2.99. Crossover issue with Justice League International #9.

Green Lantern New Guardians #9 (Tyler Kirkham & Batt Regular Cover), $2.99. Continues story from Blue Beetle #9.

MAD Archives Volume 3 HC, $59.99

Nightwing #8 (Eddy Barrows 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. The first-printings here seem to be the first big winner of the Owls crossover. Nightwing #8 has been sitting at $13-$15 since it sold out and looks to maintain that price for a while.

Savage Hawkman #9, $2.99. Rob Liefeld takes over as writer.
Showcase Presents Sea Devils Volume 1 TP, $19.99
Stormwatch Volume 1 The Dark Side TP, $14.99

Comic Book History Of Comics TP, $21.99
G.I. JOE A Real American Hero Volume 4 TP, $19.99

Godzilla #1 (Cover A Art Adams)

Godzilla #1 (Cover A Art Adams), $3.99. It’s hard to know what happens with this one. As a Godzilla-nerd, I’m excited for the new series but I don’t think it’s going to ship the 100k the last Godzilla #1 did. There was all manner of store exclusive covers that drove those orders and left that comic virtually worthless in process. I like Swierczynski as a writer and will definitely grab a copy but I don’t see this one going crazy.

Godzilla #1 (Cover B Tony Harris), $3.99 1:4. Ships with regular covers.
Godzilla #1 (Ryan Kelly Movie Tribute Variant Cover), 1:10

Transformers More Than Meets The Eye #5 (Marcelo Matere Variant Cover), 1:10

True Blood #1 (Cover A Tim Bradstreet)

True Blood #1 (Cover A Tim Bradstreet), $3.99. This is another tough one to call. True Blood comics did have their heyday and were pretty hard to find for a while. Now, they seem to have cooled off. I’m guessing this one sells out after re-orders but there probably won’t be a lot of action to talk about.

True Blood #1 (Cover B Photo), $3.99. 1:4, ships with regular covers
True Blood #1 (Tim Bradstreet Sketch Variant Cover), 1:10

Illustration Magazine #37, $15

Elephantmen #39, $3.99

Epic Kill #1 (Raffaele Ienco 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. First-printings here had a flash where they we’re selling for $5 and up, but that appears to be over now.

Near Death #8, $2.99
Netherworld TP, $19.99
No Place Like Home #4, $2.99
Prophet #25, $2.99
Rebel Blood #3 (of 4), $3.50

Saga #1 (Fiona Staples 4th Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. Saga first-prints have come down to the $8-$10 range after eBay was flooded with copies when they were selling for almost $30. Still doing very well and starting the long creep back up in price.

Thief Of Thieves #2 (3rd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99
Thief Of Thieves #3 (3rd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99

Thief Of Thieves #4 (2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. Thief first-prints continue to go bonkers with sets of #1-#4 going for upwards of $80 and no sign of coming down.

Witchblade #156 (Cover A John Tyler Christopher), $2.99
Witchblade #156 (Cover B Diego Bernard & Fred Benes), $2.99
Xenoholics Volume 1 TP, $14.99
Youngblood #71 (Cover A Rob Liefeld), $2.99

Youngblood #71 (Cover B Ryan Ottley), $2.99. Youngblood returns and, so far, retailers don’t seem to care. This is the first of the Extreme Relaunch titles not to sell out before shipping. Maybe Image printed more than usual? It’s a mystery.

Youngblood #71 (Cover C Chris Giarusso), $2.99. Limited to 1,000 copies.

Knights Of The Dinner Table #186, $5.99

Deltora Quest Volume 6 GN, $10.99

Amazing Spider-Man #686 (Gabriele Dell’Otto Variant Cover), 1:15. Another beautiful Dell Otto variant here. All of these have been selling well. Watch for a $7-$9 price tag and expect to pay at least $15 next week.

Amazing Spider-Man Volume 1 Behind The Mask SC (Young Readers Novel), $6.99

Astonishing X-Men #50 (Dustin Weaver Regular Cover), $3.99. Before DC announced that one of their previously straight characters would be coming out of the closet, this comic was going to be Marvel’s big gay headline. Either Northstar will be proposing to his boyfriend or vice versa. Regardless, this issue did get some press, Whoppie Goldberg made the announcement on “The View”, which could whip up some interest, but DC’s big news seems to be quashing that at present.

Astonishing X-Men #50 (John Cassaday Variant Cover)

Astonishing X-Men #50 (John Cassaday Variant Cover), 1:50. Nicely done, as usual, Mr. Cassady. I love this variant and you should too. At 1:50, this one shouldn’t be too tough to find. Watch for a $25-$35 price tag. If the buzz on this one does go crazy this could be a very hot variant.

Astonishing X-Men #50 (John Cassaday Sketch Variant Cover), 1:100
Avengers #25 (Daniel Acuna 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99
Avengers The Many Faces Of Henry Pym TP, $19.99

Mighty Thor By Matt Fraction Volume 1 TP, $19.99
Mighty Thor By Matt Fraction Volume 2 HC (Premiere Edition), $24.99

Secret Avengers #27

Secret Avengers #27, $3.99. This is the issue Captain Marvel (not a Skrull, not a clone, the real shebang) returns to the Marvel U. As of May 22, #27 is still in stock but I’m betting that changes quickly. Watch for this issue to sell out before the weekend and stupid prices will follow.
