The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 06/13/2012

by Matt Baum (06/12/12).

Massive #1 (Rafael Grampa Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of Lists of new comics are courtesy of and Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

This Wednesday belongs to Brian Wood who has a new series, The Massive from Dark Horse, and is taking over two different X-titles. Also Spidey meets Ultimate Spidey, Batgirl meets her nemesis, and KISS and Pantha are back. Which is exciting for some, I suppose.

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, June 13, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #10 (Phil Noto Regular Cover), $2.99
Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9 #10 (George Jeanty Variant Cover), $2.99
Conan The Barbarian #5, $3.50

Massive #1 (Brian Wood Regular Cover), $3.50. New Sci-Fi series by Brian Wood (writer DMZ, Conan, Northlanders).

Massive #1 (Rafael Grampa Variant Cover), 1:5. I love Grampa’s art and this variant is coming home with me. Watch for a $5 price tag.

Neon Genesis Evangelion The Shinji Ikari Raising Project Volume 11 TP, $9.99

Star Wars Knight Errant Escape #1 (of 5)(Benjamin Carre Regular Cover), $3.50. New mini-series by John Jackson Miller following Jedi Knight Kerra Holt, based on his bestselling novel.

Star Wars Knight Errant Escape #1 (of 5)(Mike Hawthorne Variant Cover), 1:5
Strain #5 (of 12), $3.50

American Vampire Lord Of Nightmares #1 (of 5), $2.99. New mini written by Scott Snyder, art by Dustin Nguyen.

Batgirl #10, $2.99. Knightfall part 1.
Batman #10 (Combo Pack Edition), $4.99. With free digital download code.
Batman #10 (Greg Capullo Regular Cover), $3.99

Batman #10 (Rafael Albuquerque Variant Cover)

Batman #10 (Rafael Albuquerque Variant Cover). Retailers could order this variant based on their lowest-ordered DC Relaunch #10 issue this week. Personally, I hoped for a little more from an Albuquerque Bat-variant. Don’t pay more than cover here.

Batman #10 (Greg Capullo Black & White Variant Cover)

Batman #10 (Black & White Variant Cover)

Batman #10 (Greg Capullo Black & White Variant Cover). Suddenly, this is a 1:100 variant. No word yet if DC is switching all its sketch/B&W variants to 1:100 ratios, but it would certainly make these variants more accessible to both retailers and collectors. Currently, these aren’t blowing up (one pre-sold on Monday for $31), but the lower ratio could spark some sales. Watch for $40-$50 price tag.

Batman #4 (Mike Choi 4th Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. First prints were selling for $10 regularly but have settled to around $5. Still, as the Court of Owls story line continues to get rave reviews, I’d expect these early Bat-issues to continue to crawl up on value.

Batman And Robin #10, $2.99
Batman Arkham Unhinged #3, $2.99
Batwoman Volume 1 Hydrology HC, $22.99
Before Watchmen Silk Spectre #1 (of 4)(Amanda Conner Regular Cover), $3.99.
Before Watchmen Silk Spectre #1 (of 4)(Combo Pack Edition), $4.99. With free digital download code.

Before Watchmen Silk Spectre #1 (of 4)(Dave Johnson Variant Cover)

Before Watchmen Silk Spectre #1 (of 4)(Dave Johnson Variant Cover), 1:25. This is a really nice variant by Dave Johnson and there should be plenty around. Watch for a $10-$12 price tag.

Before Watchmen Silk Spectre #1 (of 4)(Jim Lee Variant Cover), 1:200. These are pre-selling for a little less than $100, and that’s probably a good place to stay. It’s a great-looking cover and it’s Jim Lee, so collectors will care but I don’t see this variant selling for more than $100 anytime soon.

Birds Of Prey Volume 1 End Run TP, $14.99
DC Comics Presents Superman Adventures #1, $7.99
Deathstroke #10 (Rob Liefeld Regular Cover), $2.99
Deathstroke #10 (Rob Liefeld Variant Cover), AR

Lone Ranger #6 (Francesco Francavilla Regular Cover), $3.99

Pantha #1 (Mark Texeira Regular Cover), $3.99. Pantha is back and tied directly into the Dynamite Vampirella Universe (which seems to be infested with bad-girls from every defunct comic company you can think of).

Pantha #1 (Sean Chen Regular Cover), $3.99
Pantha #1 (Mark Texeira Variant Cover), $3.99. Both regular covers ship 50/50.
Pantha #1 (Mark Texeira Virgin Variant Cover), 1:25
Pantha #1 (Sean Chen Black & White Variant Cover), 1:15

Spider #2 (John Cassady Regular Cover), $3.99. Sold out. #2 is already pre-selling just above cover price. #1 was reviewed very well (I loved it), but Dynamite doesn’t seem to be printing to meet demand. Which is good for collectors but bad for potential readers who aren’t on the ball. Add this one to your pull file or you might miss it.

Spider #2 (Francesco Francavilla Variant Cover), 1:10. with regular covers
Spider #2 (Ron Lesser Variant Cover), 1:20, with regular covers

Cobra #14 (Cover RI David Williams), 1:10
Dungeons And Dragons Classics Volume 3 TP, $24.99
KISS #1 (Cover A Nick Runge), $3.99

KISS #1 (Cover B Jamal Igle), $3.99. Because someone demanded it, KISS is back in their own monthly comic. IDW does a bang-up job with their licensed properties, but this one could be a real challenge. I’ll be reviewing it for the show this week, so I guess I’m going to find out first hand.

KISS #1 (Cover RI Michael Gados), 1:10

KISS #1 (Cover RI Photo)

KISS #1 (Cover RI Photo), 1:20. Of course, you have to have a photo variant. There are still legion of Kiss collectors out there (there’s a guy that calls my shop once a week looking for “any new KISS stuff”) and they are going to be looking for this photo variant. Watch for $10-$15 price tag but don’t expect to see too many of these.

Night Of 1,000 Wolves #2 (of 3)(Cover A Dave Wachter), $3.99
Night Of 1,000 Wolves #2 (of 3)(Cover RI Michael Manomivibul), AR

Popeye #1 (Bruce Ozella 2nd Printing Variant Cover). First prints continue to sell for $6 and up. Who knew Popeye still had the magic?

Alpha Girl #3, $2.99
Bulletproof Coffin Disinterred #5 (of 6), $3.99

Dancer #1 (2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.50. Dancer was a great read but didn’t get the huge response some other Image #1’s had been receiving. First-prints are selling for $5 and might go up a little bit from there, but until writer Nathan Edmondson has a big break-out title, I don’t see this comic doing much.

Dancer #2, $3.50
Danger Club #2 (2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99
Invincible #92, $2.99
Manhattan Projects #3 (2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.50

Saga #3 (2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99
Skullkickers #15, $3.50

Thief Of Thieves #1 (4th Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. First-prints of #1 are now selling for more than $40 thanks to AMC announcing its development into a TV series.

Amazing Spider-Man #687 (Gabriele Dell’Otto Artist Variant Cover)

Amazing Spider-Man #687 (Gabriele Dell’Otto Artist Variant Cover), 1:15. Another beautiful variant by Dell’Otto, who has firmly replaced Marko Djurdevic as Marvel’s go-to painter. All of the Dell’Otto Ends of the Earth variants are selling well ($15 and up; #682 is going for $40) and will probably continue to go up in price. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag.

Amazing Spider-Man The Movie #2, $2.99
Avengers #27, (AvX) $3.99
Avengers Assemble #3 (Mark Bagley 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99

Avengers Assemble #4 (Mark Bagley Regular Cover)

Avengers Assemble #4 (Mark Bagley Regular Cover), $3.99. Thanos makes his return to the Marvel U fresh from his brief appearance in the end of the Avengers movie. It might be a little late to cash in on Thanos-mania with everyone gearing up for the Spidey and Batman movies.

Avengers Assemble #4 (Stephen Segovia Amazing Spider-Man In Motion Variant Cover), 1:25

Spider-Man Spider-Hunt TP, $29.99
Spider-Man The Graphic Novels HC, $34.99

Spider-Men #1 (of 5)(Jim Cheung Regular Cover), $3.99. Peter Parker meets Miles Morales in the first Marvel/Ultimate Marvel crossover and it looks pretty solid. I don’t see this one selling out and even if it does, there should be plenty of copies around. It’s going to be a great read though. Especially when Miles tells Pete about Ultimate Pete’s death. Ohh boy… Here come the tears again.

Spider-Men #1 (of 5)(Comic Shop Variant Cover)

Spider-Men #1 (of 5)(Sara Pichelli Variant Cover)

Spider-Men #1 (of 5)(Comic Shop Variant Cover), Retailers had to exceed their orders of Avengers Assemble #1 with Spider-Men #1 and then they could order a minimum of 500 copies of the Comic Shop cover featuring their store logo. I don’t expect anyone in their right mind will be selling these for more than cover price. However, people are buying these for $6 and up. Stop it! There’re plenty of these out there!

Spider-Men #1 (of 5)(Humberto Ramos Variant Cover), 1:30
Spider-Men #1 (of 5)(Sara Pichelli Variant Cover), 1:100. I love this Pichelli variant. She’s really coming into her style and I excited to see much more from her. Watch for a

  1. Eric says:

I dont get the appeal of Spider-Men… Pete has visited a few universes be it in comics, tv or other. Seeing what is just another random universe here really shouldnt have any effect on him as a character since he is used to seeing that different things happen in different planes of existence And the Ultimate universe only meas something to the reader, not the characters. That kid Miles will think its great though as he gets to see Pete as a seasoned veteran and gets to take away a gift if you read the spoilers.
