The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 07/18/2012

by Matt Baum (07/18/12).

Captain Marvel #1 (Adi Granov Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. Lists of new comics are courtesy of Previewsworld.com and Comiclist.com. Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

There’s not a lot of new series this week but there is a new Captain Marvel. And this time it’s a girl, well a woman and she used to be Ms. Marvel. Just click on the preview below and you’ll get the idea. Also, Danger Girl teams up with G.I. Joe, Tribbles are infesting the Enterprise (again), and don’t forget to pick up copy of the Stuff of Legend Omnibus. It’s 260 pages of awesome!

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, July 18, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Jugheads Double Digest #183, $3.99
Sonic Universe #42 (Stephen Downer Regular Cover), $2.99

Sonic Universe #42 (Sega Variant Cover)

Sonic Universe #42 (Sega Variant Cover), $2.99. It could be due to a lot of comic stores not ordering the variants for the Sonic comics, but a couple of these variants have pre-sold for $10. Both auctions included the regular cover as well, but that’s still only $6 cover price and neither cover is sold out. A savvy retailer might up his order here and throw a few on eBay.

BONGO COMICS

Radioactive Man Volume 1 Radioactive Repository HC, $25.99
Simpsons Comics #192, $2.99

BOOM! STUDIOS

Adventure Time #6 (Cover A Chris Houghton), $3.99
Adventure Time #6 (Cover B James Lloyd), $3.99
Adventure Time #6 (Cover C Dan Hipp), 1:15

Adventure Time #6 (Cover D Steve Wolfhard)

Adventure Time #6 (Cover D Steve Wolfhard), 1:20. Adventure Time variants continue to sell very well (aside from some #5 variants that had James Kolchaka’s name misspelled in the auction title) and it’s probably because they’ve all been great. This issue is no exception, with fun variants from Hipp (watch for a $6-$8 price tag) and Wolfhard (watch for an $8-$10 price tag). Expect these to go just as fast as the others and those prices to slowly climb.

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser Volume 3 Heaven’s Reply TP, $14.99
Elric The Balance Lost #11 (of 12)(Cover A Francesco Mattina), $3.99
Elric The Balance Lost #11 (of 12)(Cover B Dan Panosian), $3.99

Extermination #2 (Cover B Trevor Hairsine), $3.99
Extermination #2 (Cover C Michael Gaydos), 1:15
Extermination #2 (Cover D Ben Oliver Sketch), 1:20
Extermination #2 (Cover E Trevor Hairsine Sketch), 1:25

Extermination #2 (Cover F John Cassaday CGC 9.8)

Extermination #2 (Cover F John Cassaday CGC 9.8), 1:50. The 9.8 variants of #1 finally popped up in the CGC Census with a total of 95 graded copies. I would guess #2 will have a similar number. Don’t go insane here, especially since all 95 copies will be in 9.8 condition. Watch for a $35-$40 price tag.

Hypernaturals #1 (Mitch Breitweiser 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99. Sold out. This one started strong but prices have settled back to cover after spiking to just under $7. I still think first prints will crawl back up to near $10.

Roger Langridge’s Snarked #10, $3.99

COMIC SHOP NEWS

Comic Shop News #1309. If your comic shop is cool, then this should be free. If it’s not free, there’s a good chance your shop isn’t very cool.

Justice League #11 (Bryan Hitch Variant Cover)

Justice League #11 (Bryan Hitch Variant Cover). Retailers could order this variant based on their lowest-ordered New DCU title shipping this week. Which means, don’t treat this like a ratioed variant. Most shops are selling these for cover price, which is what you should be paying if you need this one. And, is it just me, or are Supes and Bats wearing their pre-relaunch costumes on this cover?

Justice League #11 (Jim Lee Black & White Variant Cover),
Legion Of Super-Heroes #11, $2.99
Men Of War Volume 1 Uneasy Company TP, $19.99. Collects #1-8.

Danger Girl G.I. JOE #1 (of 4)(Cover B J. Scott Campbell), $3.99
Danger Girl G.I. JOE #1 (of 4)(Cover RI-A J. Scott Campbell), 1:10

Danger Girl G.I. JOE #1 (of 4)(Cover RI-B J. Scott Campbell), 1:250. This is described as a hand-sketched cover but I can’t seem to find any numbers on how many Campbell sketched. I also can’t find anyone pre-selling this variant, which leads me to believe that no one ordered the 250 copies necessary to get it. Or, it isn’t shipping this week. Lots of mystery here. I’ll get back to you when I know more.

KISS #2 (Cover A Jamal Igle), $3.99
KISS #2 (Cover B Nick Runge), $3.99

KISS #2 (Cover RI-A Michael Gaydos)

KISS #2 (Cover RI-A Michael Gaydos), 1:10. I’m a Gayados fan, but this is kind of hilarious. Like, high-school art project circa 1976 hilarious. But hey, maybe he’s being ironic here. Watch for a $4-$6 price tag.

KISS #2 (Cover RI-B Photo), 1:20
Mars Attacks #2 (Cover A John McCrea), $3.99

Mars Attacks #2 (Cover RI Sam Kieth)

Mars Attacks #2 (Cover RI Sam Kieth), 1:10. This is a fantastic variant cover by Kieth and should be hard for any Kieth fan to pass on. Watch for a $5-$7 price tag.

Night Of 1,000 Wolves #3 (of 3)(Cover A Dave Wachter), $3.99

Night Of 1,000 Wolves #3 (of 3)(Cover RI Michael Manomivibul)

Night Of 1,000 Wolves #3 (of 3)(Cover RI Michael Manomivibul), 1:10. This is the first I’ve seen of Manomivibul, but with talent like this I expect to see more from him soon. This is really nice looking work. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag.

MARVEL COMICS

Avengers Academy #33 (AvX), $2.99
Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Jim Cheung Regular Cover), $3.99
Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Alan Davis Avengers Team Variant Cover)

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Alan Davis X-Men Team Variant Cover). Once again, retailers had to exceed their orders of another AvX comic (this time it’s #4) by 90 percent before they could order both Team variants as needed. Which is insanity. Especially given that AvX #4 was the highest-ordered title that month. Ninety percent of any order is a big pile of comics for any store. Don’t pay more than cover price for either of these.

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Alan Davis Variant Cover)

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Alan Davis Variant Cover), 1:25. This is a wild and wooly Davis variant that might be a bit of a spoiler for this issue. Wasn’t Beast firmly on the Avengers side? Just saying. Watch for a $10-$12 price tag.

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Adam Kubert Variant Cover)

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Jerome Opena Variant Cover)

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Adam Kubert Variant Cover), 1:50

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Jerome Opena Variant Cover), 1:100. Beautiful work here from Opena, as usual, but is it just me, or does Thor look tiny? Like Ant-Man tiny. Weird, right? Watch for a $40-$50 price tag and there should be plenty of these around.

Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)(Jerome Opena Sketch Variant Cover), 1:200. Stay under $100 here. The lower the better. None of the 1:200 AvX variants are selling for much more than $80.

Avengers West Coast Avengers Family Ties TP, $29.99. Collecting WEST COAST AVENGERS (1985) #1-9 and VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #1-2.

Captain America And Bucky The Life Story Of Bucky Barnes TP, $14.99. Collecting CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BUCKY #620-624.

Captain Marvel #1 (Ed McGuinness Regular Cover), $2.99. Former Ms. Marvel, Carol Danvers, is getting another wardrobe change and a new costume. This one looks like a lot of fun. Writer Kelley Sue DeConnick is red hot right now and doing great work. Pick this one up. Marvel offered a deep discount program on #1 to try to spur more interest in the new Captain Marvel, but I’m betting retailers are still hesitant. Watch for a sellout announcement next week when the reorders come in.

Captain Marvel #1 (Adi Granov Variant Cover), 1:25. This is a bit of a change of pace for Granov, who is usually drawing robots and exo-armor, but still a great looking variant. Watch for a $12-$15 price tag.

Captain Marvel #1 (Paolo Rivera Amazing Spider-Man 50th Anniversary Variant Cover), AR

X-O Manowar #3 (Mico Suayan Variant Cover), 1:20. This variant reminds me of a 1970’s black light poster. Like something that would be pinned up in the back of a smokey conversion van. Not bad, but very neon pink and blue. Watch for a $10-$12 price tag.

  1. Eric Miller says:

So Mars Attacks! had something like 58 variants for issue #1… wouldnt you think that they would back off and not do a variant for issue #2 just to let fans kinds relax and recover from that? Just saying.

At SDCC I was fortunate enough to speak fith Joe Q at the Cup ‘O Joe panel and found out that he has zero plans in the future to do any comics featuring Scrooge, Donald and the other core Disney characters… I am probably one of a very few that cares, but that really sux.

I couldnt part with the $60 that was needed to get a copy of Thief of Thieves #1 1st print, but I did score a Walking Dead #93 for $5 from someone who didnt know it featured the first appearance of the Thief book.

    • Matt Baum Matt Baum says:

Nice score on the Walking Dead 93. That’s a brutal bummer on the Duck books. I noticed Boom is still publishing the collections which leads me to believe they either still have some time left on their contract or Marvel is letting them keep it, for now. I’ll do some digging and see what I come up with.

As far as Thief #1, you should still be able to grab one off Ebay for under $50.
