The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 07/25/2012

by Matt Baum (07/25/12).

American Vampire #29 (Dave Johnson Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. Lists of new comics are courtesy of Previewsworld.com and Comiclist.com. Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

First of all, sorry about the tardiness. I had major dental work done and it didn’t go well. Rest assured I’m in pain and paying for the late blog as you read this. Next week we’re back on schedule as usual. My bad. But this week watch for the return of Axe Cop, a new Kid or maybe just Guy-Eternity at DC, a new team of reality jumping X-folks at Marvel and all matter of Grim Fairy Tales.

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, July 25, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. DC COMICS

All-Star Western #11, $3.99
American Vampire #29 (Rafael Albuquerque Regular Cover), $2.99.

American Vampire #29 (Dave Johnson Variant Cover), 1:25. Dave Johnson reminded me how amazing he is with this cover. I love this one. The reflection of the teeth in the blood; amazing. Watch for a $10-$12 price tag.

I Vampire #11

I Vampire #11, $2.99. This is one the best comics you are not reading. Seriously, writer Joshua Hale Fialkov is doing excellent work here and in this issue is answering the question, what happens when a vampire bites a zombie and vice versa. That’s heavy stuff.

Justice League Dark #11, $2.99
MAD Presents Batman #1 (One Shot), $5.99

National Comics Eternity #1, $3.99. This is the first in a line of one-shots that will introduce readers to lesser known characters of the New DCU. I like the idea but I’m still not clear on the decision to label these as “National Comics.” Could be confusing to casual readers.

IDW PUBLISHING

Art Of Molly Crabapple Volume 2 Devil In The Details SC, $12.99

Crow Midnight Legends Volume 1 Dead Time GN, $17.99. My understanding here is that this is a comic adaptation of a script, written by Crow creator James O’Barr, for a Crow film. Correct me if I’m wrong: maybe this would have been a better way to kick off the IDW Crow series rather than a new Crow in Japan. Just saying.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 (Cover RI Ryan Ottley)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 (Cover RI Ryan Ottley), 1:10. Great variant by Invincible artist Ryan Otley. I want to love this series so much but it’s just not grabbing me. Watch for a $6-$8 price tag.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro Series #6 (Casey Jones)(Cover A David Petersen), $3.99

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro Series #6 (Casey Jones)(Cover B Mike Henderson)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro Series #6 (Casey Jones)(Cover B Mike Henderson), $3.99, 4:1, ships with regular covers. I’m not familiar with Henderson but he is obviously an old-school TMNT fan because this is a fantastic Casey Jones cover. I hope to see more from Henderson soon.

Amazing Spider-Man #690 (Shane Davis Lizard Variant Cover)

Amazing Spider-Man #690 (Shane Davis Lizard Variant Cover), 1:25. Another Lizard variant and this one is yet another example of how cool the Lizard could have looked in the recent Amazing Spider-Man film. Nicely done Mr. Davis. Shame on you Hollywood. Watch for a $10-12 price tag.

X-Treme X-Men #1 (Julian Totino Tedesco Regular Cover), $2.99. New series that spins out of Pak’s Astonishing X-Men, featuring a team of X-analogs jumping to different timelines and dimensions. My pick of the week and definitely my main review this week on the show. Sounds like fun in the vein of Judd Winick’s Exiles series from the early 2000s. Why not just call it Exiles again. I feel like we as a country have moved passed the adjective “extreme.”

X-Treme X-Men #1 (Salvador Larroca Variant Cover)

X-Treme X-Men #1 (Salvador Larroca Variant Cover), 1:20. This is a real nice-looking variant by Larroca for a series that I think could be great. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag but there may not be a lot of these out there initially; more might show up next week when the re-orders for #1 come in.
