The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 07/27/2011

by Matt Baum (07/27/11).

Green Lantern Corps #62 (Francis Manapul Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by WorthPoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics and back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from the Overstreet Guide to Comics (OVST), Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. The codes under the prices of new titles discussed are Diamond Comics order codes that can be used to help your local comic retailer in ordering the issues discussed. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch him on his podcast, the Tow-Headed Nerd Comicast, where he and his friend Joe discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, July 13. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. To find a comic shop near you, click here.

Variant Watch

Here’s a list of all the variants shipping from Diamond this Wednesday July 27th. and some info on the hot ones. The variant Ratios (ie; 1:10) represent how many of the regular issues the retailer has to order to receive one of the variants. If a ratio is not included it’s because I couldn’t get the information or because the variant is a new printing. The prices I post here are suggested, reasonable prices based on the ratios and may be higher or lower at your comic shop. Click here for this week’s complete shipping list.

Green Lantern Emerald Warriors #12 (Alex Garner Variant Cover), 1:10. Alex Garner has been doing a lot of Wonder Woman variants for the last year and now that he’s branching out to GL, I want to see a lot more. Watch for a $5-$7 price tag.

Speculator Picks of the Week

These are comics that could sell out very quickly due to conservative ordering, popular demand, shipping errors or even the U.S. declaring bankruptcy, causing a complete economic meltdown the likes of which even Greece would be able to point and laugh at just so one political party can make a point. Pick them up while you can or pay too much for them later . . .

Captain America and Bucky #520

Captain America and Bucky #520

MARVEL COMICS

Written by ED BRUBAKER & MARK ANDREYKO
Penciled by CHRIS SAMNEE
Cover by ED MCGUINNESS

Solicitation: Think you know the story of Cap and Bucky’s origins? Well, think again. The secret story of the early days of Captain America, told from Bucky Barnes’ point of view. From co-writers Ed Brubaker and Marc Andreyko with artist Chris Samnee (Thor: The Mighty Avenger).

32 pages
$2.99
MAY110624

Why it’ll go fast: Cap just got a new first issue two weeks ago and a lot of fans and retailers may not have remembered that the original Cap series was continuing under this new Cap and Bucky title. I’m guessing retailers lower their orders on this series to increase their orders on the new Cap series. Which is too bad, because Brubaker seems to be grooming Marc Andreyko (writer of Manhunter from DC) to take over this series. Andreyko had a strong cult following at DC but never seemed to get a proper showcase. I’m guessing Cap and Bucky #520 sells out next week when the re-orders come in.

Amazing Spider-Man #666

Amazing Spider-Man #666

MARVEL COMICS

Written by DAN SLOTT
Penciled by STEFANO CASELLI
Cover by MIKE DEL MUNDO

Solicitation: The Spider-Man story of the decade begins with this “Spider-Island: Prelude.” Super-star writer Dan Slott and fan-favorite Spidey artist Stefano Caselli are back! New York has been infested and the web grows as it gets ready to explode into Spider-Island! Normal people are getting spider-powers! But not all of them realize that with great power must also come . . . you know the rest. OK, sure, we often say Peter Parker’s life will never be the same. But listen, pal, we’ve never been more serious. Heroes and villains are crawling all over Manhattan and no one knows why. This will change everything for Pete, for Spidey . . . and possibly for you! Look at it this way . . . if everyone’s a Spider-Man . . . then no one is.

40 pages
$2.99
MAY110632

Why it’ll go fast: Normally, when a comic hits it’s 666th issue, we get a story starring, you guessed it, the devil. Number of the beast and all that. But writer Dan Slott proves that he’s anything but predictable and instead launches the new Spidey-event, Spider-Island. Like the other Slott Spidey-event stories before this one, you can bet it’s going to sell out very quickly. I’m a little shocked it’s not sold out already.

Ghost Rider #1

Ghost Rider #1

Marvel

Written by ROB WILLIAMS
Penciled by MATTHEW CLARK

Solicitation: Fear Itself tie-in. In the wake of “Fear Itself,” the Spirit of Vengeance gets a new lease on death! The hottest, most rocking thing on two wheels returns! Start pumping your fists and banging your head for Ghost Rider # 1, by writer Rob Williams (Dark Wolverine) and featuring the long-awaited return of superstar artist Matt Clark (Outsiders, Superman, Inhumans). Witness the violent birth of the all-new Ghost Rider . . . come to cleanse the earth in a firestorm of Blood, Oil and Vengeance! Johnny Blaze has been chained to Hell long enough. With the world thrown into chaos in the events of Fear Itself, he is given a chance to rid himself of the Spirit of Vengeance forever . . . and he takes it. The curse is passed onto a new host, but Blaze has no idea what nightmares his action has wrought upon the world. Will the new Spirit of Vengeance bring us salvation . . . or send this world of sinners to a flaming death?

40 pages
$3.99
MAY110568

Why it’ll go fast: There’s another big relaunch from Marvel this week, Captain America #1, and my guess is that it completely overshadows Ghost Rider’s return. Even with this being a Fear Itself tie-in, I’m guessing retailers don’t order huge on Flame Head’s return . . . initially. When the issue #1 flies off the shelves, you can bet they’ll be re-ordering as many copies as possible. Watch for a sell-out announcement early next week on Ghost Rider. Personally, I haven’t been “wowed” by writer Rob Williams work at Marvel, but it seems to believe in him and maybe this is the title where he finds his footing. I’d love to read a good Ghost Rider title monthly. I’m just tired of Johnny Blaze sounding like Nicholas Cage channeling Elvis.
