The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 08/08/2012

by Matt Baum (08/09/12).

Star Wars Lost Tribe Of The Sith Spriral #1 (of 5)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of Lists of new comics are courtesy of and Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

Filing this weeks report from the road this week so again, pardon my tardiness. I’m still working the bugs out of this apple iCloud thing but you could probably care less about that. What you do care about is this week’s comics! Watch for a new Gambit series, another IDW Godzilla series by the unstoppable James Stokoe, another Star Wars Sith mini-series and the return of THUNDA (not a spelling error and I had to look him up too) and Valiant’s Archer and Armstrong are back!

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Aug. 8, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Idolized #1 (Cover A Arthur Adams)

Idolized #1 (Cover A Arthur Adams), $3.99

Idolized #1 (Cover B Photo), $3.99. Think American Idol but with superheroes. I reviewed the #0 issue on my show and was pleasantly surprised. Idolized doesn’t seem like it’s going to be your typical Aspen comic (I don’t mean that as an insult, just that they have a theme going) and I’ll probably read this one for the show too.

Idolized #1 (Cover C Arthur Adams Sketch Incentive), $5.00. For every 16 Idolized #1 ordered (any combination), retailers may purchase up to 3 additional Adams Sketch covers.

Storm Rider #2, $3.99

Adventure Time Marceline And The Scream Queens #2 (Cover C Erica Henderson)

Adventure Time Marceline And The Scream Queens #2 (Cover D Jen Wang)

Adventure Time Marceline And The Scream Queens #2 (Cover D Jen Wang), 1:20. Again, two adorable variant covers from two awesome artists chosen by the Adventure Time editors. Both are great and, like the first issue variants, these will sell well and go fast. Watch for a $7-$9 price tag on the 1:15 and a $10-$12 price tag on the 1:20.

Conan The Barbarian #7, $3.50. Artist Becky Cloonan returns. I love her!
Conan Volume 12 Throne Of Aquilonia HC, $24.99. Collects Conan: Road of Kings #7-#12.

Creep #0

Creep #0, $2.99. This is the story of a detective with a rare disease that makes him huge and gives him haggard features (Acromegaly; it’s real . . . Andre the Giant suffered from it), who’s investigating the death and suicide of two different young boys. It’s written by The Mask creator John Arcudi so I’ll be picking this one up.

Grendel Omnibus Volume 1 Hunter Rose TP, $24.99. If you’ve never read Grendel, here’s your chance to find out why he’s one of the most important and original characters in modern comics. Creator Matt Wagner is one of my favorite writer/artists and Grendel/Hunter Rose is widely considered to be his greatest creations, but you should read his Mage stuff too.

Massive #3 (J. P. Leon Regular Cover), $3.50
Massive #3 (Rafael Grampa Variant Cover), 1:10

Star Wars Knight Errant Escape #3 (of 5), $3.50

Strain #7, $3.50

American Vampire Lord Of Nightmares #3 (of 5), $2.99
Batgirl #12, $2.99. Guest staring Batwoman.
Batman #12 (Greg Capullo Regular Cover), $3.99. Court of Owls epilogue.
Batman #12 (Combo Pack Edition), $4.99. With free digital download code.

Batman #12 (Bryan Hitch Variant Cover)

Batman #12 (Bryan Hitch Variant Cover). I can’t stress this enough: don’t pay more than cover for this one. Retailers could order this variant based on their lowest-ordered New 52 title with the same FOC as this issue. Meaning it’s not a ratioed variant and not rare. It’s a nice Hitch variant—I dig the color and the action pose—but it’s not going to be rare.

Batman #12 (Bryan Hitch Black & White Variant Cover), 1:100. The Batman 1:100 variants continue to slide downwards in price. These are pre-selling for just over $40 and I think that’s a good price to shoot for.

Batman And Robin #12, $2.99
Batman Arkham Unhinged #5, $2.99
Before Watchmen Ozymandias #2 (of 6)(Jae Lee Regular Cover), $3.99
Before Watchmen Ozymandias #2 (of 6)(Combo Pack Edition), $4.99. With free digital download code.

Before Watchmen Ozymandias #2 (of 6)(Phil Noto Variant Cover)

Before Watchmen Ozymandias #2 (of 6)(Phil Noto Variant Cover), 1:25. Another very cool BW variant, this time from Phil Noto. Unfortunately, like most of the BW variants, these are pre-selling for around $5. I would stay away here unless you can find it for the $5-$6 mark.

DC Universe Online Legends Volume 3 TP, $24.99
Deathstroke #12, $2.99
Deathstroke Volume 1 Legacy TP, $16.99. Collects #1-8
Demon Knights #12, $2.99
Fairest #6, $2.99. “Wide Awake” conclusion.
Flash Chronicles Volume 3 TP, $14.99. Collecting THE FLASH Vol. 1 #113-118.

O.M.A.C. Volume 1 Omactivate TP, $16.99. Collects #1-8.

Punk Rock Jesus #2 (of 6)

Punk Rock Jesus #2 (of 6), $2.99. Do yourself a favor and pick up #1 and #2 of this series if you missed it. Sean Murphy is at the top of his game here writing and drawing an amazing story about the clone of Jesus Christ on a reality show in the near future.

Ravagers #4, $2.99
Resurrection Man #12, $2.99
Right State HC, $24.99
Scooby-Doo Where Are You #24, $2.99

Pantha #3 (Mark Texeira Virgin Variant Cover), AR

Red Sonja Atlantis Rises #1 (Lucio Parrillo Regular Cover), $3.99. Red Sonja does battle with the Ghost of Thulsa Doom who is planning to… Well, raise Atlantis, I guess? Really weird solicitation.

Th’unda #1 (Jae Lee Regular Cover), $3.99. Thunda was created by Frank Frazetta in the early 1950s for the Golden Age publisher Magazine Enterprises and later became a serial starring Buster Crabbe. In true Dynamite fashion, it’s bringing Thunda back for a new series, but I have to wonder if, like John Carter, it went through the proper copyright channels. If not, I’d expect the Frazetta estate to try to kill this series very quickly.

Th’unda #1 (Jae Lee Black & White Variant Cover), 1:15
Th’unda #1 (Jae Lee Virgin Variant Cover), 1:25

This is my pick of the week and I’ll probably be reviewing this one on this week’s podcast. Asmus will also soon be taking writer Nick Spencer’s place as the rotating writer on Robert Kirkman’s Thief of Thieves.

Gambit #1 (Variant Cover), 1:25. I can’t seem to find an artist credit on this variant. If I had to guess, I’d say Chris Bachalo? Nice cover, regardless. Watch for a $10-$12 price tag.
