The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 08/31/2011

by Matt Baum (08/31/11).

Justice League #1 (David Finch Black & White Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by WorthPoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics and back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from the Overstreet Guide to Comics (OVST), Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. The codes under the prices of new titles discussed are Diamond Comics order codes that can be used to help your local comic retailer in ordering the issues discussed. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch him on his podcast, the Tow-Headed Nerd Comicast, where he and his friend Joe discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Aug. 24. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. To find a comic shop near you, click here.

Variant Watch

Here’s a list of all the variants shipping from Diamond this week and some info on the hot ones. The variant Ratios (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many of the regular issues the retailer has to order to receive one of the variants. If a ratio is not included it’s because I couldn’t get the information or because the variant is a new printing. The prices I post here are suggested, reasonable prices based on the ratios and may be higher or lower at your comic shop. Click here for this week’s complete shipping list.

ASPEN

Executive Assistant Violet #2 (of 3)(Cover B Pop Mhan Sketch Variant Cover). For every eight regular covers ordered retailers may order up to three sketch variants. Pretty weird ratio there Aspen.

Soulfire Volume 3 #3 (Cover C Jason Fabok Sketch Variant Cover). For every 15 regular covers ordered retailers could order up to five sketch variants: 1:5, now that’s a ratio that I can get behind.

AVATAR:

Chronicles Of Wormwood The Last Battle #6 (of 6)(Oscar Jimenez Anti-Christ Edition) 1:3
Crossed Psychopath #2 (of 7)(Gianluca Pagliarani Philadelphia Comic Con Cover), $5.99. Limited print run of 850.

BOOM!

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser #4 (Cover C Tim Bradstreet), 1:10
Planet Of The Apes #5 (Cover C Karl Richardson), 1:10
Stan Lee’s The Traveler #10 (Cover B Dimitri Armand), 1:10

BOUNDLESS:

War Goddess #1 (Michael Dipascale Art Deco Cover), 1:3

DARK HORSE:

Angel And Faith #1 (Jo Chen Variant Cover), $2.99. For every 10 copies of the regular cover ordered retailers can order two Chen variants.

Angel and Faith #1 (Georges Jeanty 25th Anniversary Variant Cover), $5. Same as above, but retailers could only order one for every 10 covers.

DC:

Flashpoint #5 (of 5)(Andy Kubert Black & White Variant Cover A), 1:25

Flashpoint #5 (of 5)(Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez Variant Cover B). Retailers had to meet or exceed a level set by DC for each retailer on their regular Flashpoint orders and they could order as many cover B variants as needed. This is one we’ll have to watch to establish a price point.

Justice League #1 (David Finch Variant Cover), 1:25

Justice League #1 (David Finch Black & White Variant Cover), 1:200. I’m not crazy about Finch’s variant; he makes the Justice League look a little too mean. And once again, the 1:200 variant is a sketch cover. So the DCU may have changed but it’s business as usual when it comes to variants. Retailers will be asking anywhere from $100-$200 for this one but, as with most very popular titles with 1:200 variants, if you wait you can probably pick this one up for under $70. There’ll certainly plenty of them out there.

DYNAMIC FORCES

Kirby Genesis #2 (Dynamic Forces)(Alex Ross Virgin Exclusive Cover), $19.99
Warlord Of Mars Dejah Thoris #5 (Dynamic Forces)(Arthur Adams Exclusive Cover), $14.99
Project Superpowers Trading Card Box

DYNAMITE:

Kato Origins #11 (The Hellfire Club)(Final Issue)(Francesco Francavilla Variant Cover), 1:10
Vampirella #9 (Fabiano Neves Black & White Variant Cover), 1:10
Vampirella #9 (Paul Renaud Red Variant Cover), 1:25
Warlord Of Mars Fall Of Barsoom #2 (Francesco Francavilla Variant Cover), 1:10
Warlord Of Mars Fall Of Barsoom #2 (Francesco Francavilla Virgin Variant Cover), 1:25
Warlord Of Mars Fall Of Barsoom #2 (Joe Jusko Black & White Variant Cover), 1:15
Zorro Rides Again #2 (Matt Wagner Black & White Variant Cover), 1:10

IDW:

Locke And Key Clockworks #2 (of 6)(Gabriel Rodriguez Variant Cover), 1:10
Rocketeer Adventures #4 (of 4)(Alex Ross Sketch Variant Cover), 1:10
Rocketeer Adventures #4 (of 4)(Black & White Variant Edition), 1:25

IMAGE:

Witch Doctor #2 (of 4)(2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99

MARVEL:

Amazing Spider-Man #666 (Humberto Ramos 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99
Amazing Spider-Man #667 (Humberto Ramos 2nd Printing Hero Sketch Variant Cover), $3.99
Amazing Spider-Man #667 (Humberto Ramos 2nd Printing Lizard Sketch Variant Cover), $3.99
Fear Itself #1 (of 7)(Stuart Immonen 4th Printing Variant Cover), $3.99

Incredible Hulks #635 (Adi Granov Variant Cover)

Incredible Hulks #635 (Paul Pelletier Variant Cover)

Incredible Hulks #635 (Adi Granov Variant Cover), 1:25. It’s not the Red Hulk, just Green Hulk with a Red shine to him. And really purple veins. I don’t love it, but if you need this one watch for a $12-$15 price tag.

Incredible Hulks #635 (Blank Variant Cover)

Incredible Hulks #635 (Paul Pelletier Variant Cover), 1:15. This one I love. Nice color choices by Pelletier. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag.

Mighty Thor #5 (Greg Land Variant Cover), 1:20
Secret Avengers #16 (Jamie McKelvie Variant Cover), 1:15
Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 (of 6)(Mark Bagley 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99
Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 (of 6)(Sara Pichelli 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99

Ultimate Comics Hawkeye #1 (of 4)(Adam Kubert Variant Cover)

Ultimate Comics Hawkeye #1 (of 4)(Adam Kubert Variant Cover), $3.99, 1:15. Very Cool Kubert variant for this one but Ultimate Hawkeye comes polybagged, so I don’t know how it is going to catch collector’s eye with the variants. Watch for a $6-$8 price tag.

Ultimate Comics Hawkeye #1 (of 4)(Neal Adams Variant Cover), $3.99 1:25
Uncanny X-Force #12 (Mark Brooks 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99
Venom #1 (Joe Quesada 4th Printing Variant Cover), $3.99
X-Men Schism #2 (of 5)(Frank Cho 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99

MOONSTONE:

Captain Action King Size Special #1 (Mark Wheatley Variant Cover), 1:10

ZENESCOPE:

Salems Daughter Haunting #1 (Mike DeBalfo SDCC Variant Cover), $2.99. Retailers had to order 20 copies of Salem’s Daughter #1 and they could order one SDCC variant. Limited to 60 copies.

Speculator Picks of the Week

These are comics that could sell out very quickly due to conservative ordering, popular demand, shipping errors or even the Standard and Poor’s going on a mad power-kick and downgrading Diamond’s shipping department to “crappy” for the amount of damaged product received by retailers everywhere on any given Wednesday. Pick them up while you can or pay too much for them later . . .

Angel and Faith #1

Angel and Faith #1

DARK HORSE
Written by CHRISTOS GAGE
Art by REBEKAH ISAACS
Cover by STEVE MORRIS

Solicitation: Left in a near-catatonic state following the events in Buffy Season 8, Angel will need a seriously rude awakening if he’s to make amends for his ill-conceived deeds. Enter rebel Slayer with a cause—Faith Lehane. Together they’ll have full access to the Watcher files and opportunities to make amends for all they’ve done . . . and will do.

40 pages
$2.99

Why it’ll go fast: Full disclosure here, I’m a huge Buffy nerd and it should be said that my wife has often accused me of having a man-crush on David Boreanaz (the guy that played Angel on Buffy and special-agent “somebody” on Bones). The guy is easy on the eyes, what can I say. Angel also happened to be the most interesting character in the Buffy U, so much so that he spawned his own spin-off show which some, me included enjoyed more than the weaker Buffy seasons. Angel has been around in the pages of IDW’s Angel title but the story was not taking place in the officially sanctioned Buffy title overseen by Buffy creator Joss Whedon at Dark Horse. There was a pretty big stink made by IDW Angel writer Bill Willingham when Whedon announced that Angel would be joining the Dark Horse Buffy U and that the IDW stories were not in his continuity. But that’s all ancient history and fans of the Dark Horse Buffy title are super-psyched to see Angel back. No offense, IDW. Watch for this one to have a bit of a slow-burn. I’m betting that after the re-orders come in this weekend Angel sells out. Buffy has been a really high-quality title at Dark Horse and this one looks to maintain that standard. Just look at that page count; 40 pages for $2.99. What a steal!

Vault #2

Vault #2

IMAGE
Story by SAM SARKAR
Art by GARRIE GASTONNY & SAKTI YUWONO
Cover by GARRIE GASTONNY & BAGUS HUTOMO

Solicitation: A small team of treasure hunters struggles to excavate a dangerous and legendary treasure pit before a massive storm hits Sable Island, the Graveyard of the North Atlantic. Equipped with all the latest technology, the scientists believe they are prepared against all of nature’s fury, but nothing can prepare them for what they are about to unleash from the Vault.

32 pages
$2.99
JUL110548

Why it’ll go fast: Writer Sam Sarkar has re-teamed with Garrie Gastony—the duo that gave us Caliber from Radical Comics—on this mini-series about deep sea treasure hunting, and issue #1 was a hit with readers, leaving me kicking myself for missing this one. Mainly because it’s gone. Sold out and selling for upwards of $7 on eBay. Issue #2 has sold out before shipping and will probably disappear from the shelves just as fast. Watch for this one to also be selling for $5 and up almost instantly.

Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye #1

Ultimate Comics: Hawkeye #1

MARVEL
Written by JONATHAN HICKMAN
Art by RAFA SANDOVAL
Cover by KAARE ANDREWS

Solicitation: Hawkeye’s back in a bad way. Armed and dangerous, Clint Barton is tasked with his most perilous mission yet. And what he discovers will reverberate in the entire Ultimate Universe.

32 pages
$3.99

Why it’ll go fast: The Ultimate Relaunch is in full swing at Marvel and, with last week’s sell-out of Ultimates #1, a success. Now, to see if Hawkeye can sustain his own title in the Ultimate U, unlike his regular Marvel U counterpart. I’m guessing with Jonathan Hickman writing and beautiful jump-off-the-page-art by Rafa Sandoval, this one is going to be a hit as well. However, I don’t think this will be a first-week sellout like Ultimates. Hawkeye is a side-character and only the second (third?) to get his own title. Even Captain America doesn’t have one. So I’m guessing retailers aren’t going to order as high on this one. Watch for a sellout next week.
