The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 11/14/2012

by Matt Baum (11/14/12).

Avengers Assemble #9 (Joe Quesada Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. Lists of new comics are courtesy of Previewsworld.com and Comiclist.com. Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

It’s Wednesday again and that means it’s time for another new pile of comics. And this week looks pretty cool. The Marvel Now hits just keep coming with this week’s new Thor, Fantastic Four and X-Men #1’s. Nathan Edmosdson’s Jake Ellis makes his return and you need to read it! Locke and Key begins its final mini-series, the final issue of The Boys shows up and Mind MGMT gets a #0 issue. Race you to the comic shop…

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Nov. 14, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Adventure Time #1 (Pendleton Ward SDCC Variant Cover)

Adventure Time Marceline And The Scream Queens #1 (of 6)(Meredith Gran SDCC Variant Cover)

Adventure Time #1 (Pendleton Ward SDCC Variant Cover), $19.99. BOOM! is clearing out the leftover SDCC variants this week and so far, this is the only one that has sold out. It’s easily the weakest of the group in my opinion and the most expensive.

Adventure Time Marceline And The Scream Queens #1 (of 6)(Meredith Gran SDCC Variant Cover), $9.99. This is definitely a homage to a late ’70s, maybe early ’80s record that I own and love but, for one reason or another (red wine) I can’t seem to place it.

Adventure Time Marceline And The Scream Queens #5 (of 6)(A Jen Bennett), $3.99

Batgirl #14, $2.99. Sold out. Death of the Family tie-in.

Batman #13 (Aaron Kuder 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99. The Death of the Family storyline pushed this one to sell-out status very quickly and first-prints are selling for $20 and up.

Batman #14 (Greg Capullo), $3.99. Death of the Family tie-in.
Batman #14 (Combo), $4.99. Comes with digital download code.
Batman #14 (Greg Capullo Black & White Variant Cover), 1:25

Batman #14 (Trevor Mccarthy Variant Cover)

Batman #14 (Trevor Mccarthy Variant Cover). Retailers could order this variant equal to their lowest-ordered DC New 52 title with the same FOC. I’m guessing this week it’s Team 7. Don’t pay more than cover here.

Batman and Robin #14, $2.99. Sold out and listed as a Death of the Family lead-in.

Batman Arkham City End Game #1 (One Shot)(Jason Shawn Alexander Regular), $6.99. This is a reprint of the digital-first Arkham City comics and, with a $7 price tag, I wouldn’t expect it to sell too well.

Batman Arkham City End Game #1 (One Shot)(Patrick Gleason & Derek Fridolfs Variant), 1:25
Batman Arkham Unhinged #8, $2.99
Blue Beetle Volume 1 Metamorphosis TP , $14.99. Collects #1-6 of the New 52 Blue Beetle.

Green Lantern Corps #14 (Scott Clark Black & White Variant Cover), 1:25

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #4 (of 6), $2.99
Legion Lost #14, $2.99
Phantom Stranger #2 (Brent Anderson Regular Cover), $2.99

Phantom Stranger #2 (Ethan Van Sciver Variant Cover)

Phantom Stranger #2 (Ethan Van Sciver Variant Cover), 1:25. These new 1:25 variants are no doubt an attempt to boost sales after disappointing sales on the first issue (#1 checked in at #85 on last month’s Diamond Top 300). While it’s a nice looking Van Sciver cover, I wouldn’t expect to find to many. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag.

Punk Rock Jesus #5 (of 6), $2.99
Ravagers #6, $2.99
Saucer Country #9, $2.99
Scalped Volume 10 Trail’s End TP, $14.99. Collects the final issues of Scalped #56-60.

Team 7 #2 (Doug Mahnke Regular Cover), $2.99

Team 7 #2 (Brett Booth Variant Cover), 1:25. It seems the 1990s are back and DC brought Brett Booth back to prove it. With issue #1 checking in at 107 on last month’s Top 300 Ordered Comics list, I wouldn’t expect to see too many of these variants around. Or this series for much longer. Watch for an $8-$10 price tag.

Young Justice Volume 2 Training Day TP , $12.99. Collects #7-13.

DYNAMIC FORCES

Walking Dead #100 (CGC 9.8)(Dynamic Forces), $89.99. Here’s the deal; there’s still plenty of copies of the regular WD #100 issues out there and no reason to pay $90 for a CGC 9.8 copy. The CGC Census lists 117 copies in this condition and counting. Don’t pay $90 for this.

Locke And Key Omega #1 (of 7)(Cover A Gabriel Rodriguez), $3.99. It’s the beginning of the final Locke and Key mini-series.

Locke And Key Omega #1 (of 7)(Cover SUB Photo), $3.99. This variant was intended for retailers to order for customers that had pre-ordered the title. However, like the Valiant pull-box variants, Diamond has no way to enforce the idea. Meaning retailers could order as many of this variant as needed, effectively making this another regular cover. Don’t pay more than cover price here.

Locke And Key Omega #1 (of 7)(Cover RI Gabriel Rodriguez), 1:10

IMAGE COMICS

Elephantmen #44 (Cover A Brandon Graham), $3.99
Elephantmen #44 (Cover B Chris Giarrusso), $3.99

Great Pacific #1, $2.99. Sold out for three weeks now. Why? Not sure, other than maybe a lower print-run than usual? Writer Joe Harris and artist Martin Morazzo certainly aren’t the kind of names that push a comic into pre-shipping-sell-out. While some sites are predicting this issue goes insane on the back issue market, I’m saying this seems a little fluky and don’t see it selling for much more than $10 and only for a short time. Looks like a good read though.

Grim Leaper TP, $14.99

Hack Slash #20 (Cover A Tim Seeley), $3.50

Shinku Volume 1 TP, $14.99. Collects #1-5.
Thief of Thieves #10, $2.99
Think Tank #4, $3.99
Walking Dead #104, $2.99

Where Is Jake Ellis #1 (of 5), $3.50. Pick this one up. Writer Nathan Edmonson and artist Tonci Zonjic’s first Jake Ellis mini, (Who is Jake Ellis, available in TPB now) was one of my favorite mini-series of last year and I can’t wait for this new one. Think Memento meets Jason Bourne.

All-New X-Men #1 (Paolo Rivera Variant Cover)

All-New X-Men #1 (Stuart Immonen Unimpressed Deadpool Variant Cover)

All-New X-Men #1 (Skottie Young Baby Variant Cover). Retailers had to exceed their orders for Avengers Vs. X-Men #10 with orders for All New X-Men #1 and they could order these variants as needed. The X-Baby and Deadpool covers are both pre-selling for $5.

All-New X-Men #1 (Paolo Rivera Variant Cover), 1:50. Rivera is just awesome. I love Ice Man and I love this variant… and I just paused writing to call my shop and have them hold me one of these. I paid $20 and that seems fair.

Fantastic Four #1 (Dave Johnson Artist Variant Cover), 1:50. This has got to be Johnson’s first Fantastic Four cover right? I didn’t love it as much as I thought I would but, still very cool. Watch for a $35-$40 price.

Fantastic Four #1 (Joe Quesada Variant Cover), 1:100

Fantastic Four #1 (Joe Quesada Sketch Variant Cover), 1:150. Here’s a very sassy looking Invisible Woman by Joe Q. Watch for a $40-$45 price on the 1:100 and a $75-$80 price on the 1:200. There should be plenty of these to go around.

Fear Itself Hulk Dracula TP, $24.99

Red She-Hulk #59 (Luke Ross Variant Cover)

Red She-Hulk #59 (Luke Ross Variant Cover), 1:50. Fun variant here paying homage to Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer, but sorry Marvel, you’re not going to make me care about the Red She-Hulk. Watch for a $35-40 price but don’t expect to see too many of these.

Spider-Men HC, $24.99. Collects 1-5 of the Spider-Men mini. Totally worth a read.

Thor God of Thunder #1 (Skottie Young Baby Variant Cover)

Thor God of Thunder #1 (Blank Variant Cover). Retailers had to exceed 125 percent of orders for AVX Vs. #3 with orders for Thor God of Thunder #1 before they could order these variants as needed.

Venom #27, $2.99
Wolverine and the X-Men #20, $3.99

X-Men Legacy #1 (Mike Del Mundo Regular Cover), $2.99. I’m not sure what to think here. While I’m excited to see Simon Spurrier, writer of extinction for BOOM!, getting his own X-series, I’m not convinced that retailers are going to be excited about a series that follows Charles Xavier’s son Legion. Me, I’m thrilled, but I’m admittedly an old guy who actually remembers Legion. Pick this one up; it’s going to be a fun X-read.

X-Men Legacy #1 (Kaare Andrews Variant Cover)

X-Men Legacy #1 (Skottie Young Baby Variant Cover)

X-Men Legacy #1 (Kaare Andrews Variant Cover), 1:50. Super weird Andrews variant here but I really like it. I’m also curious to see how well this title sells. Don’t expect to see too many of these out there. Watch for a solid $45-$50 price tag here. I love Legion but I don’t expect many retailers to bite on this one.

X-Men Legacy #1 (Skottie Young Baby Variant Cover)
