The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 11/28/2012

by Matt Baum (11/28/12).

FF #1 (Arthur Adams Variant Cover)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. Lists of new comics are courtesy of Previewsworld.com and Comiclist.com. Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

I guess it’s time to start thinking about Christmas but, remember to save some cash for New Comic Day! This Wednesday there’s a new Star Wars to check out, Witch Doctor returns, the FF gets new members, Alex Ross illustrates an entire comic for a change and … My Little Pony? Really?

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Nov. 28, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth #101 (The Return Of The Master Part 4 of 5)(Mike Mignola Variant), 1:5. This has got to be the final in the “Year of Monsters” series by Mignola and I’m not really sure what monster this is supposed to be. Still, a very cool Mignola cover, as usual, and you should be able to find it for $5-$6.

Teen Titans #14 (Brett Booth & Mark Irwin Black & White Variant Cover), 1:25

Masks #1 (of 8)(Sean Phillips Variant Cover), AR
Masks #1 (of 8)(Alex Ross Hand-Drawn Variant Cover),

Masks #1 (of 8)(Jae Lee Hand-Drawn Variant Cover). Retailers had to commit to ordering 750 copies of Masks #1 before they would receive one of each hand-drawn cover. I have no idea how much these will sell for or if anyone even ordered the amount necessary to receive them. I’d say $750 is a heck of a commitment and, at $3.99, I would guess retailers would want at least $1,000? At $500 per? Let me know if any of you see these at your shop.

  1. Eric says:

So Superior Spider-Man will feature a non-Peter Parker Spider-Man… anyone who read issue 698 is getting the hint at this. But how long do you think Marvel goes with this storyline since we all know Pete will eventually return since there are movies/cartoons/etc all based on Pete?
The story will probably be great, but if you go to long with a substitute it starts to hurt the product.

On a similar note… what is the over/under on how many issues come out as the Marvel NOW renumbering before they return to the old numbering? I figure about 50-60 giving it a good 5-year run.

  2. Matt Baum Matt Baum says:

It sounds like Pete will still be around, just maybe not Spidey. Or maybe time displaced? I’m on board regardless. Dan Slott is killing it on Amazing and where he decides to go, I’ll follow.

As far as the “Now” business. If it goes on for more than a year I’ll be annoyed. Numbering has become so meaningless any more I barley care. I just don’t want to look at red borders on all the covers with the NOW title for too much longer.
