The Comic Speculator – New Comics Roundup 08/22/2012

by Matt Baum (08/21/12).

Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #1 (of 4)(Cover RI-A Chris Samnee)

The Comic Speculator is a blog written by Worthpoint Comic Book “Worthologist” Matt Baum that takes a look at each week’s hot new comics, back issues and the comic market place in general. Prices discussed here are taken from Comicspriceguide.com (CPG) and current online auction sales. Sales numbers and rankings are courtesy of ICV2.com. Lists of new comics are courtesy of Previewsworld.com and Comiclist.com. Make sure and click on the links to learn more about the titles and creators discussed here. If you want to hear what this nerd sounds like you can catch me on my podcast, the Two-Headed Nerd Comicast, where my friend Joe and I discuss the latest comic news, review some new comics, and answer your questions.

New Comics Roundup

Word up, nerds! It’s almost Wednesday and time for another trek to the friendly neighborhood comic shop. This week, it’s Spidey’s 50th birthday, Cavewoman is back in a new mini-series, everyone’s favorite British-Buffy-vamp Spike gets his own mini, Dr. Manhattan is back and wearing pants this time, the Dinobots are back and Mark Waid writes the Rocketeer. What a great new comic day right?

Below you will find all the info you could possibly need on all the hot, new comics shipping this Wednesday, Aug. 22, including variant ratios, storyline and creator notes and a little speculation on what could be hard to find in the future. The ratios listed after titles (i.e.; 1:10) represent how many issues of a regular cover retailers had to order to get the variant. Issues that are part of a crossover or storyline have an abbreviated title in parenthesis after the title comic (i.e.; AvX). Be sure to let me know what you think of the new format and remember to click on the links for previews. For a full list of comics shipping this week, click here. Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #1 (of 4)(Cover B Dave Stevens), $3.99
Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #1 (of 4)(Cover RI-A Chris Samnee), 1:25

Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #1 (of 4)(Cover RI-B Chris Samnee), 1:100. This is solicited as a “hand drawn” sketch edition, which is very cool, but I’m finding it hard to find any more info (i.e. how many did he sketch? Is each sketch unique?). I’m guessing this one could be hard to find, too. Watch for a $70-$80 price tag and send me one if you find it and I’ll give you a sweet high-five.

Transformers More Than Meets The Eye #8 (Cover B Nick Roche), $3.99

Transformers More Than Meets The Eye #8 (Cover RI Marcelo Matere)

Transformers More Than Meets The Eye #8 (Cover RI Marcelo Matere), 1:10. Who can resist a Transformers variant featuring Grimlock, the Autobots resident robot-T-Rex? Certainly not a Dinobot fan like myself. Watch for a $5-$7 price tag.

Prophet Volume 1 Remission TP, $9.99. Collects the first six issues of the relaunched Prophet series. If you missed out on the issues, here’s your chance to see what I’ve been screaming about on THN. Prophet is some of the most original and well executed comic book sci-fi I’ve encountered in years.

Walking Dead #98 (2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99

MARVEL COMICS

Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1970s Variant)

Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1980s Variant)

Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1990s Variant)

Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1960s Variant),
Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1970s Variant),
Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1980s Variant),
Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 1990s Variant),

Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 2000s Variant)

Amazing Spider-Man #692 (Marcos Martin Spidey Through The Decades 2000s Variant). This was a set of five variants that sold for $30 ($6 each). Retailers had to exceed their order of ASM #685 (part 4 of “Ends of the Earth”) by 150 percent before they could order as many sets as needed. This is an amazing set by Martin, but it’s going to be hard to guess a price range here. Currently, these sets are selling for $35-$40 and that’s not a bad price. There might not be a lot of these out there so grab them quick. Will they go up from here? Oh yeah.

Astonishing X-Men #53, $3.99
Astonishing X-Men Northstar HC (Dustin Weaver Cover), $24.99

Astonishing X-Men Northstar HC (Marko Djurdjevic Direct Market Cover), $24.99. Collecting ASTONISHING X-MEN (2004) #48-51 and material from NATION X #2. This was the Northstar gay-wedding story. You may have heard a blurb about that on the news recently.

Avenging Spider-Man #9 (Terry Dodson 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $3.99

Brilliant #4 (Mark Bagley Regular Cover), $3.95. Diamond Comics solicitation info is saying that Brilliant is now a five-issue mini-series. However, writer Bendis says “nuh-uh.” Not sure what’s going on here but it sounds like a mistake on Diamond’s end.

Brilliant #4 (Michael Avon Oeming Variant Cover)(resolicited), 1:15
Brilliant #4 (David Mack Variant Cover)(resolicited), 1:25
Captain America And Namor #635.1, $2.99

Captain Marvel #1 (Ed McGuinness 2nd Printing Variant Cover), $2.99. First-prints here are selling for a little more than $5 and I don’t expect them to go much higher anytime soon.

Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe #4 (of 4)

Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe #4 (of 4), $2.99. Sold out. Retailers are biting on this one a little too late, it seems. Issues #1 is currently selling for $16-$20 and going up from there. #2 and #3 are both selling for a little more than $5 and I would expect #4 to do the same when it vanishes from the new shelves.

Disney Fairies Magazine #8 (Disney Publishing Worldwide), $4.99
Disney Pixar Cars Magazine #8 (Disney Publishing Worldwide), $4.99

Fear Itself Avengers TP, $19.99. Collecting AVENGERS (2010) #13-17 and NEW AVENGERS (2010) #14-16.

Fear Itself TP, $29.99. Collecting FEAR ITSELF: BOOK OF THE SKULL and FEAR ITSELF #1-7.

Invincible Iron Man #523, $3.99
Marvel Masterworks Golden Age Captain America Volume 1 TP, $29.99
Marvel Universe Ultimate Spider-Man #5, $2.99

Namor Visionaries By John Byrne Volume 2 TP, $24.99. Collects NAMOR THE SUB-MARINER (1990) #10-18.

Punisher #14, $2.99
Secret Avengers #30, $3.99
Supercrooks #4 (of 4), $4.99

Thunderbolts Classic Volume 3 TP, $29.99, Collecting THUNDERBOLTS #15-22 and #0, CAPTAIN AMERICA & CITIZEN V ANNUAL 1998, and AVENGERS (1998) #12.

Ultimate Comics The Ultimates #14, $3.99
Uncanny X-Men #17 (AvX)(Michael Del Mundo Regular Cover) , $3.99
Untold Tales Of The Punisher MAX #3 (of 5), $3.99

Venom #23 (Patch Zircher Regular Cover), $2.99. New creative team of writer Cullen Bunn and artist Thony Silas take over. New story line “Monsters of Evil” begins.

Venom #23 (Humberto Ramos Variant Cover), 1:30. This is a nice-looking Ramos variant and it might be easier to find if retailers take notice of the new creative team and raise their orders. But sales are slipping on the title and Bunn might not be the name to get them excited. Watch for a $12-$15 price tag.

Web Of Spider-Man #129.1, $2.99
Wolverine #312 (Simone Bianchi Regular Cover), $3.99

Wolverine #312 (J. Scott Campbell Variant Cover)

Wolverine #312 (J. Scott Campbell Variant Cover), 1:30. This was a Lenil Yu variant but was changed to Campbell and (I’m not a Campbell fan) it looks pretty good. Watch for a $12-$15 price tag and expect to fight off the Campbell fans.

Wolverine And The X-Men By Jason Aaron Volume 2 HC (Premiere Edition), $19.99. Collects #5-#8.

Wolverine Annual #1 (Alan Davis Variant Cover)

Wolverine Annual #1 (Alan Davis Regular Cover), $4.99. Part 3 of a crossover that started in Fantastic Four annual #33, and continued in Daredevil annual #1.

Wolverine Annual #1 (Alan Davis Variant Cover), 1:20. Alan Davis has been on a roll at Marvel lately and, as usual, his work is amazing. Watch for a $8-$10 price tag. Keep in mind that orders on Annuals are typically low due to higher cover-prices, so this one might be a little harder to find but it will be out there and it shouldn’t be terribly expensive.

X-Men Legacy #272, $2.99
