My research shows that before Thomas Nast worked for the New-York Illustrated Daily News, beginning in 1862, he did anti-Lincoln charicatures for a magazine "Phunny Fellows" beginning in 1861. None were signed. Many can be found in the New York State Library: the Rare Book and Special Collectors Library, University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champagne. To find other internet source listings look under "Thomas Nast Illustrator Lincoln characatures.

According to Nast's biographer, Albert Bigelow Paine (1904) Nast's only official biographer, he was asked about early Lincoln caricatures and Nast denied drawing them (page 61}.

"Long afterward when Nast had become a national figur, he was accused by his enemies of having caricatured Linclon as a drunken sto, bu the picture reffered to was done by antoher hand. Nast never caricatured Lincoln in his life -- never criticized him in a single word or line."

You could not be more correct. Editorial or poiltical cartoons are incredibly underpriced. Pulitzer prizes are awarded and there are numerous incredible talents that helped uncover major stories and scandals. These men helped change policy and continue to do so. Thomas Nast is responsible for the upheaval of Boss Tweed and Tameny Hall in NY, as well as depicting the images we now know as Santa Claus, the Democratic donkey and Republican elephant.

The person who deserves a book unto himself is the great Winsor McCay. Pioneer in creating animation as we know it, the comic strip form with his incomparable Little Nemo In Slumberland and finally becoming William Randolph Hearst's chief editorial cartoonist. http://www.allstarcomicart.com have sold some great examples.

The great news is that aside from a handful of the greats, outstanding editorial cartoons from the past century ca be purchased for $50-200.

This does not look like a Nast drawing. Can you tell me where his signature is? I cannot see it in this image.
