Molly Pitcher

A rare scene. A Revoloutionary “Artilery Wife” Mary Hays McCauly a.k.a Molly Pitcher scene in this early 1900’s postcard loading the mouth of a cannon. This women’s sacrifices helped win the United States battle for independance. Mary Hays earned her name in the begining by helping the men on the battle field by bringing them pitcher after pitcher of cool spring water for the parched men. She was given the nickname Molly Pitcher. She also tended to the wounded men and even saved an injured man from the battle field by carrying him on her back to safety. She was recognized by George Washington as a Non Comissioned Officer and was named again Sergeant Molly.

Women today keep pivotal roles in representing the United States of America. The Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Secretary of State Condeleeza Rice and my home state of Maine Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. We have all to thank for equality and quality of life as we know it today.Let us not forget as we celebrate the 332nd year of America’s independance that it is not only the men who sacrificed for our freedom but women too. Have a happy 4th of July weekend. Thank You ~~ Eddie McDonough
