Melanie, Harry has a book and written some great columns on weeding out our posessions. I hate to paraphrase him as I will be ineffective. But he talks about creating a keep pile and get rid of pile. You need to be somewhat ruthless on the keeps as you can quickly end up with perpetuating the problem and have too much for your downsizing.

Now, that being said, I would be as scientific about determing values in the get rid of pile. Higher value smaller items should be researched for their values, which is the purpose of WorthPoint. These items can be sold on line and are easy to ship. That is where/how you can get the best values and it can be done in matter of weeks. You can also take to your next house if need be as they do not take up too much room. (I have sold items for thousands of dollars on line, but jumping in for a first time can be intimidating)

I would next recommend having an estate/moving sale. You can put all your items in their, advertise and photo the higher priced ones correctly. Be realistic in pricing, everyone comes to an estate sale for a bargain. This is your second try on the higher items as if you did not sell on line, you will be trying to sell them here.estatesales.net is a great place to advertise and organize your sale. I know there is a fee involved, but they get good visibility for sales.

Lastly, get some help. You have to have a friend that has done a sale before. They have experience and this is a process that friends are useful for many reasons. They are good sounding boards for what to get rid, there are many type of jobs to do and they take the emotionalism out of pricing and selling.

Harry can chime in and will have some good points. If you have a particular question, email me at will@worthpoint.com. I will try to get back to you.

Hello,

I found your site through GoAntiques. I am strongly interested in doing an estate sale because I need to get rid of a lot of things due to the fact that the bank is going to kick me out of my house and I don't know where I am going. Knowing that, I will probably find a very small place so I can't take most of it with me. I have been looking for estate sale companies and really need professional advice as to how to do it.
Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

No commodity is ever worth more than when you're trying to sell it, or worth less than when you're trying to buy it.

Good article Harry, as for your last comment distracting Linda, "we do not need another thing"

You are collectors and will not pass up a bargain, we are all the same and as new items enter our lives we make room by releasing something we do not cherish as much as our new acquisition.

Keep it coming. Regards, Nick
