Hi,
I'm not an appraiser, just a lowly antiques dealer.
My approach to appraisals is to research an item, and tell the owner what I think fair market value is at this time in history.
For that, of course, I use Worthpoint as one of my sources of info, among many others, including experience accumulated in over 30 years in the business.

I back up my values with an instant offer to buy or take on consignment based on my appraised value.
I offer 25% cash on the spot, or take on consignment at 50% commission. I leave my offer to purchase open for about a week or two to allow the seller to make a reasoned decision.

In my humble opinion, that is the only appraisal I would accept from someone else if it were my stuff - one backed by cash. Most others are fluff.

Other than extremely rare objects of high value, I find this the most honest and "real-world" approach I've been able to muster in my career.
