Pope Benedict XVI has made his first papal visit to the United States. He met with President Bush, blessed Ground Zero, spoke at the United Nations and celebrated Mass at Yankeee Stadium. He will make another international trip this summer to Australia, which is hosting World Youth Day on July 15-20. The Perth Mint is honoring this visit with a Papal Dollar Commemorative. The 30mm coin is struck from aluminum bronze and features a colored picture of the Pope. It bears Perth’s “P” mintmark. Its inscriptions read “World Youth Day” and “Sydney 2008.” The obverse features the profile of Queen Elizabeth II. The mintage is 500,000 and it sells for $11.40. Australia also is issuing silver and gold proof coins of the upcoming papal visit and World Youth Day.
