Hi, Andrea;

Thanks for your inquiry. Getting an appraisal is a good idea for such an instrument. If it were to be stolen or destroyed you'd never get an insurance company to pay your claim without one.

I can do an appraisal for you through Worthpoint, at https://www.worthpoint.com/askWorthologist/index

The cost is modest. I'll need some photos and a copy of the bill of sale would be helpful. Everything can be uploaded on the page I've linked above.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi,
Thank you for the awesome info.

We (me & the Hubby) have his Father's Hohner Regina V Piano Accordion from 1937. We have is Dad in his press photo with said accordion. This is the info we got from Hohner in Germany. "It has 34 keys with 3 sets of reeds on the right side, and 111 basses on the left side" We also have the orignal bill of sales.

My father-in-law was considered prodigy and was on the radio and in note worthy music halls performing the accordion and singing in German at the age of 5. We have newspaper clippings from Troy, NY during the 1930 with him and the accordion. We are having a hard time getting a value to find out if this is something we should insure. It is in its original condition with its original case. Could please help us out with this? If you cannot could you direct us to the best person.
Thanks so much,
Andrea & Scott

Myra:

Here is a link to the correct Worthpoint page: https://www.worthpoint.com/askWorthologist/index

You'll find the Wall Street Journal article particularly enlightening.

The fee is $29.99. You pay Worthpoint and they pay an appraiser to write the report. Generally, musical instrument valuations are given to me because that's my background and expertise.

It takes me a few days to do the research, but I will examine sales of similar accordions in the past 90 days to come up with a range of values. Remember though, that ultimately the value is only the amount someone is willing to pay. Having a valuation will keep you from getting ripped off by an unscrupulous buyer. I'll also write a brief historical narrative of the Galanti, depending on what I can find.

Hope this helps...

According to the article you wrote that would be a wise decision. what is involved in this evaluation and what do you need from me. Is there a fee for this service or do you get some sort of finders fee when it sells. I am definitely interested in selling it and would like to get the most possible for it without having to invest a lot of money. That's why when I saw your article I figured I would contact you to see what you could do for me.

Hi, Myra;

Here's the link to the eBay auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Galanti-Accordian-Made-in-Italy-/170917383889?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cb784ed1

If you intend to sell yours and want a valuation to support your price, I can do a Worthologist report for you; just request a report from Worthpoint. With a report, buyers will have more confidence in your price.

I have not listed this item on ebay as I was trying to find out information and possibly what it's value is. I have been researching the internet but not having much luck. I guess if someone sold one on ebay yesterday it must be a common item.

Myra:

I have this instrument in my research notes and as far as I can see it was sold yesterday on eBay for $258 plus $63 shipping. Was it not sold? This price is about right for an accordion sold at auction but you would pay more for the same instrument at a music store (but it would have been overhauled and come with a guarantee).

I found your article interesting and have a few questions I am hoping you can help me with. I have a Galanti Brev346842 it appears to be in great condition. It has been stored upright in its original case. What can you tell me about this model and possibly how much its worth or how to go about selling it for the best price. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Bill;

Concertinas are small button accordions that are tuned to play in one key only. They are popular with players of Irish and Cajun music, and don't have the wide appeal of piano accordions. I'll be writing an article on concertinas and button accordions in a future article, but not until 2013.

There are hundreds of concertinas in the Worthpoint price guide. If you don't already have a Worthpoint subscription, you can sign up for a free trial and have a look around at those instruments to get an idea of what they are worth.

Thanks for commenting.

What about smaller, pre-war instruments?

I have what I think is called a concertina. It's marked "Concertone" and "Made in Germany". The construction looks like mostly pressed wood.

Is there any market for these, or do collectors just like the "57 Chevy" styling of the post-war accordions?
