It’s New comic Wednesday and time for another This Week In Geek New Comic Round Up! Not a terribly heavy week, but there was still plenty of fun stuff waiting for me on the new comic shelves.
Marvel released both Avenger comics this week ramping up for next week’s launch of the Secret Invasion storyline. There’s only five issues of DC’s Countdown left before the Final Crisis event. And, Freddy vs Jason vs Ash #6 hit the stands marking the end of that variant cover parade. (For more on variant covers check out my upcoming article in the Worthpoint.com research library.)
Lot’s a fun stuff, like I said. But now let’s narrow it down to my hot picks for the week.
Transhuman #1, Image Comics, Written by Johnathan Hickman, Drawn by J.M. Ringuet.
Johnathan Hickman appeared on the Comic Scene in 2006 with his critically acclaimed series Nightly News and has been steadily building a fan-base since then. Hickman writes excellent science Fiction comics and his latest offering is no exception. Hickman’s work is both underrated and under-ordered, which means that as his comics gain more attention they will become harder and harder to find. I highly recommend picking up Hickman’s other Image offerings, Nightly News and Pax Romana, while you can. If I had to pick the up-and-coming writer I’m most excited about it would be Johnathan Hickman.
Wolverine: First Class, Marvel Comics, Written By Fred Van Lente and Drawn by Andrea Di Vito.
If you are currently reading The Incredible Hercules and read last year’s Super Villian Team Up: Modok’s 11. then you already know of that Fred Van Lente writes great comics. In fact, the only reason I’m giving Wolverine: First Class a chance is because Van Lente is writing it. To be honest. I find it very hard to care about these comics that look into the untold past of characters. However, given the right talent, any story can be a good one. With the glut of Wolverine comics on the stands right now, I would guess that most retailers are going to be hesitant to order very heavily on Wolvie: First Class. This one could end up being a surprise hit.
New Avengers #39 /Mighty Avengers #1, Written by Brian Bendis, Drawn by David Mack/Mark Bagley.
This is it – The issues before the full scope of the Skrull invasion is revealed in next weeks Secret Invasion story line. Bendis has been building up to this story since New Avengers #1 and it looks like it’s going to be great! If you’re not on board with the Avengers titles you are missing out on some of the best Super Hero comics the genre has to offer. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was this geeked-up for a crossover event.
Well that’s all for now. Next week looks like it’s going to be a huge one for new comic sales, so be ready. In the meantime feel free to post to the forum topics in the comic books community and tell me what you’re reading/collecting.
Also, check out my other blog, The Comic Speculator, where I discuss classic yet still affordable back-issue comics.
