ATLANTA, Dec 12, 2008 — WorthPoint Corporation (www.worthpoint.com) today announced that it has appointed three experts to its growing international team of Worthologists.

WorthPoint Worthologists are men and women with expertise and a passion for art, antiques and collectibles. Their backgrounds include auctioneering, appraising, publishing, teaching and consulting. What all Worthologists have in common is their ability to evaluate items to determine their history, significance and worth. They all adhere to a strict WorthPoint ethical code of conduct.

The three new Worthologists are:

John Logsdon, Guthrie Center, Iowa. John is an expert in petroliana — collectibles related to gas stations or the petroleum industry. John’s father owned the Ford dealership in his small town of Guthrie Center, Iowa. Many years ago, John was given a small automotive or gasoline advertising sign (he doesn’t quite remember which now) by a service station owner. That sign spawned an interest in collecting gas pumps, globes and signs made of wood, tin, porcelain, and even neon. John traveled throughout the Midwest looking for the special, the unknown, or the collectible.

John and two partners established the Iowa Gas Swap Meet and Auctions in 1986. After 22 years, it is regarded by collectors as the premier oil and gas collectible show in the U.S. John is a life member of the Antique Auto Club of America. His collection of vintage petroliana has been featured on “Home Matters” on the Discovery Channel.

Larry Kellogg, Sarasota, Florida. Larry is an expert in circus memorabilia. For more than 35 years, Larry has had a close association with the Ringling Circus Museum in Sarasota, Florida. The museum is part of The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the official State Art Museum of Florida. In 2005 Larry and his partner were awarded a contract as consultants for the Tibbals Learning Center, which doubled the size of the Ringling Circus Museum. The center houses an interactive circus exhibition including rare circus lithographs and the Howard Bros. Circus, the largest miniature circus in the world.

Larry collects historical circus memorabilia, including books, posters, programs, couriers, heralds, photos, route books, route sheets, documents, letterhead and many one-of-a-kind items. He is a member of the Circus Historical Society and the Circus Fans Association of America.

Zoran Stamenic, Fairfax, Virginia. Zoran is an expert in Oriental rugs and textiles. Zoran, born in Serbia in 1955, spent his early professional life working in TV and film production while investing his hard-earned money into a collection of antique, Oriental tribal weavings and books about them, a passion he picked up during childhood from his grandfather, a wool monger and a carter.
A serious collector and dealer, Zoran buys, restores and preserves some of the most beautiful and important Oriental rugs of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Zoran promotes the use of tribal and village textiles in home design and decoration as a way of preserving this rich cultural legacy of the Orient. He is a recognized specialist in the preservation of antique and Oriental weavings who is equally at home in the bazaars of Istanbul as he is at antique shows in the United States and Europe.

WorthPoint’s Worthologists are men and women with expertise and a passion for art, antiques and collectibles. Their backgrounds include auctioneering, appraising, publishing, teaching and consulting. What all Worthologists have in common is their ability to evaluate items to determine their history, significance and worth. They all adhere to a strict WorthPoint ethical code of conduct.

Laura Collum, of Belleair Bluffs, Florida, is an expert in decoys, nautical items and scientific instruments. As a biologist for the federal government, Laura created a personal collection around vintage decoys. Decoys by Shourds, Marter, Mason, Dudley, Crowell, Mitchell and those from the Great Lakes, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and throughout Canada all contributed to her extensive expertise as they passed through her shop.

Her collection also includes an extensive background in assessing nautical items and scientific instruments, which still conveys her background as a biologist. Laura also has a strong background in Civil War swords and guns, an expertise she shares with her father. Her extensive expertise is truly of a Renaissance variety. Asked how she became interested in these particular areas, Laura remembers that she “was dragged from one dusty antique shop to another when I was little. Apparently something rubbed off besides the dust.”

Linda Carannante, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, is an expert in Fenton and Depression glass. Linda has been a collector, then a dealer for over 30 years along with her husband, Antonio. Up and down the East coast from Brimfield in Massachusetts to the Big Flea in Washington, DC, Linda is usually the star glassware attraction in any antique show she attends. She can also be found every weekend April through October at her stand at Shupp’s Grove in Adamstown, Pennsylvania.

Linda specializes in glassware and pottery of all kinds but has a fondness for Depression, Elegant Glass, Hall and Fenton. Linda has been recognized as one of the top Fenton glass dealers in the United States. She is a member of the Imperial Glass Club and a Fenton Gold Showcase Dealer. Since 2005, Linda has contributed to the Antique Traderprice guides on Fenton and Depression glass.

Coins will be auctioned to raise money for The Salvation Army

DENVER, Oct. 17 — The Salvation Army (http://www.imsalvationarmy.org/), WorthPoint, a leading online source for information about art, antiques and collectibles (http://www.worthpoint.com/) and ANACS, America’s oldest coin-grading service (http://www.anacs.com/) today recognized the winners of the “Cool Kids Art Contest.”

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgibin/prnh/20081017/CLF017)

The contest, open to children ages 5-12, was held to thank an unknown person or persons who dropped six gold $20 Liberty coins into Salvation Army kettles on Denver’s 16th Street Mall during last year’s Christmas holiday season.

The coins will be auctioned October 24 at a live online auction on Freeman’s Web site (http://www.freemansauction.com/), and the proceeds will help The Salvation Army serve the community. Both WorthPoint and ANACS donated their services. In addition to providing an appraisal, WorthPoint helped The Salvation Army take the gold coins to auction.

The coins, minted between 1883 and 1906, were officially graded by ANACS and valued by WorthPoint expert Ed McDonough at $900-$1,000 a piece.

WorthPoint offers a database of sales records on art, antiques and collectibles and access to and commentaries by professionals who provide expert opinions and evaluations. ANACS operates the oldest independent third-party authentication and grading service in the country.

Award Winners

Out of more than 300 submissions, The Salvation Army selected two winners each from the 5-8 and 9-12 age categories. The four winners, Taylor Goodman, 8; Myria Garcia, 6; Phoebe Bawmann, 11; Laura Bottke, 10, will each receive $25 prizes. The finalists or “Red Ribbon” winners were Emma Campbell, 7; Olivia Bilek, 8; Hope (last name unlisted), 9; Christopher Miller, 12.

“WorthPoint is about helping people understand the value of their art, antiques and collectibles,” said Will Seippel, WorthPoint CEO and founder. “But in the case of the mystery coins, there is no price tag that can be put on this unselfish act of generosity. Co-sponsoring this art contest is our way of saying thanks and helping to teach youngsters the importance of giving.”

“The generosity of this donor is only matched by the enthusiasm of these children. It is a great honor to participate in such a noble event,” added James Taylor, ANACS president. “As long as the numismatic community continues to support this effort with coin donations, The Salvation Army can count on ANACS to assist with our certification services.”

“During these uncertain times and especially as the holidays approach, this donation will go a long way toward helping provide sit-down Christmas dinners and giving comfort and support to individuals struggling with difficult family, emotional or financial problems,” said Salvation Army Maj. Neal Hogan.

Gold coins have an interesting history with The Salvation Army. The first gold coin mysteriously appeared in a Salvation Army kettle site in the Chicago suburb of Crystal Lake in 1982. Since then, more than 300 gold coins have been donated at kettle sites across the country. The proceeds from these coins have gone to help people in need.

About ANACS
Founded in 1972, ANACS is a third-party coin grading and authentication service. Located in suburban Denver, ANACS was originally created by the American Numismatic Association (ANA) in Washington, D.C., to help coin collectors identify counterfeit coins. Today ANACS is known for its collector-friendly policies offering certification of U.S. and foreign coins, as well as tokens and medals. It attributes more different types of coin varieties and errors than any other coin-grading service.

About The Salvation Army
Nearly 36 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year. The Salvation Army has been meeting people’s needs in Denver since 1887. For more than a century, the helpless, hopeless and needy have relied
on The Salvation Army for food, clothing, shelter, encouragement, comfort and prayer. In addition to these traditional services, its programs offer education, child care, elder care, gang intervention, athletics, character building, alcohol- and substance-abuse rehabilitation, as well as response to emergencies and natural disasters for the benefit of the children, families and communities of the Rocky Mountains.

About WorthPoint
Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Atlanta, WorthPoint (www.worthpoint.com) is an Internet-based data and media company that offers a vast database of sales records on art, antiques and collectibles from more than 400 auction houses. Members can share their insights, knowledge and passion and build collecting communities. WorthPoint helps collectors understand the history and value of their items and provides expert advice on how to preserve or sell them.

ATLANTA, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ — Based on current political-campaign
buttons sales, Senator Barack Obama is the likely winner of next week’s
presidential contest, according to WorthPoint political memorabilia expert

Jim Warlick.
The results are based on his historically accurate, but unscientific,
USA Button Poll. Since 1988, his poll has correctly predicted the winner
for every presidential election except for 2000. The poll was based on
thousands of button sales at political events, nonpolitical shows, sales at
Washington, D.C., locations and political conventions since late June.

Warlick is a member of WorthPoint’s expert Worthologist team. WorthPoint
(http://www.worthpoint.com) is an Internet-based data-and-media company that
offers a vast database of sales records on art, antiques and collectibles.
WorthPoint helps collectors understand the worth of their items and provides expert advice on how to preserve, buy and sell them.

“Campaigns may have gone high-tech, but old-fashioned political-campaign
buttons are as popular as ever, not only increasing in value, but helping to
predict presidential elections,” said Warlick. “In over 40 years of
collecting and selling campaign buttons, I have never seen such interest.
The possibility of electing the first woman president or the first African
American drove many to people to purchase those candidates’ buttons that
otherwise may not have been the case.”

Warlick notes that while Obama merchandise is highly popular, John F.
Kennedy memorabilia is still the most prized. Other popular presidents
include Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight
Eisenhower.

What makes a button valuable? According to Warlick, the popularity of
a president, the quantity of buttons produced and the design content are key
factors. Buttons with photographs are always more sought after by
collectors. Buttons that include both the presidential and vice-presidential
candidates are called jugates and are highly prized, especially if they
include photographs of the candidates.

As for the most valuable button, that distinction goes to Ohio Gov.
James Cox and former Assistant Navy Secretary Franklin Roosevelt. They ran
against Warren Harding in the 1920 presidential campaign — before Roosevelt
was stricken with polio. Although six different Cox and Roosevelt designs
were created, it is now believed that all were just manufacturers’ samples
and were never ordered in large quantities. Of all six designs, only 50
buttons are known to exist. In a private sale a few years ago, a 1-1/4-inch
Cox and Roosevelt jugate went for a reported $135,000.

For would-be button collectors, Warlick offers the following advice:
“Casual collectors should choose a candidate they like or admire and enjoy
studying. Investors should choose based on past sales history, quality of
button and historical significance of that particular election or
candidate.”

In addition to getting campaign-button information from sites like
WorthPoint, Warlick recommends contacting the American Political Items
Collectors (APIC), an organization devoted to the collecting of political
memorabilia.

ATLANTA, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ — WorthPoint (http://www.worthpoint.com), an Internet-based data-and-media company that offers a vast database of sales records on art, antiques and collectibles, on Monday announced the formation of the Art, Antiques and collectibles Media Network (AACMN).

This first-of-its-kind centralized online media network will help companies, agencies and media buyers market to leading online art, antiques and collectibles Web sites through a single point of contact. Founding members WorthPoint, GoAntiques and TIAS.com believe that the AACMN will provide a unique way to target an upscale, hard-to-reach population with disposable income, as well as a wider middle-income demographic.

The AACMN currently reaches 1.5 million unique visitors per month and is expected to grow rapidly as other businesses join the network.

“The goal of WorthPoint is to help our customers make money,” said WorthPoint CEO Will Seippel. “The same is true for the AACMN. Our online network will help advertisers use existing resources to reach fans of art, antiques and collectibles. As our network expands, we anticipate the AACMN will deliver even more value through even greater economies of scale.”

“The average GoAntiques user is successful, well educated and has an appreciation for the arts,” said Jim Kamnikar, president of GoAntiques. “The AACMN will help advertisers target a highly valued audience.”

“Our new partnership with WorthPoint and GoAntiques creates an unprecedented opportunity for advertisers seeking to connect with high-end consumers,” said Phillip Davies, president of TIAS.com. “The AACMN does not only benefit merchants, auctioneers and show promoters. Advertisers such as automotive, insurance and pharmaceutical companies can cost effectively target this sought-after audience.”

For more information about the AACMN, send inquires to sales [at] worthpoint [dot] com

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Atlantique City Antiques & Collectibles Show will host selections from “The American Presidential Experience,” a sweeping exhibit dazzling audiences this week at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

The exhibit for the Oct. 18-19 antiques show is made possible though a special partnership between Atlantique City and WorthPoint.com, the Internet’s largest social network for researching the worth of antiques and collectibles.

In addition to the exhibit, special “Worthologists” will be on hand to discuss political memorabilia and offer their expert advice.

“America’s presidential campaigns and political memorabilia are an important part of our history and culture,” Atlantique City Show Producer Eric Bradley said. “The American Presidential Experience is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to witness a fascinating display of political pop culture. It’s a wonderful addition to an extraordinary line up of quality dealers and antiques.”

More than 400 of America’s finest dealers fill the Atlantic City Convention Center with 19th and early 20th century antiques, fine art, jewelry, toys and pop culture collectibles. Atlantique City is the only antiques show in the world to offer free furniture delivery within a 200-mile radius of the show and the original provider of free celebrity appraisals.

WorthPoint recently agreed to acquire GoAntiques Inc., the oldest antiques and collectibles website and a significant online network for buying and selling antiques and collectibles. Its network includes 600,000 items from more than 1,300 dealers in 31 countries and the world’s largest antiques and collectibles price guide, PriceMiner®.

“The new, bigger WorthPoint will have more than 1 million visitors a month to our combined web pages,” said WorthPoint CEO Will Seippel. “Atlantique City is one of the largest indoor antiques and collectibles shows and it has been a destination for collectors for more than two decades. We complement each other in important ways to better serve collectors,” Seippel said. “It’s a great partnership.”

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to tour The American Presidential Experience during its stay in Denver this week. Visitors to the Presidential Experience can have their pictures taken sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office, walk through the cabin of Air Force One, see collections of historical flags, presidential documents and First Lady Inaugural Ball gowns, hear some of the greatest presidential speeches in history, meet the authors of presidential biographies and books about the presidency. Visitors can also take a guided tour of the bus that has served as the C-SPAN mobile production studio during this year’s presidential campaign.

Advance tickets to Atlantique City are now $15 for Saturday, $10 for Sunday or $25 for a weekend pass. All advance ticket buyers are admitted at 9 a.m. Saturday at no extra charge – a full hour before the box office opens!

ATLANTA, Aug. 20 — Atlanta-based WorthPoint ( www.worthpoint.com ), a Web 2.0-based data and media company that offers a vast database of sales records on art, antiques and collectibles, announced Wednesday that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Dublin, Ohio-based GoAntiques ( www.goantiques.com ), an online network for buying and selling antiques and collectibles.

With 100 million avid collectors around the world and the global collectibles market estimated at $150 billion a year, combining two of the premier Web sites for art, antiques and collectibles was just common sense for Will Seippel, Founder and CEO of WorthPoint Corporation and Jim Kamnikar, President and CEO of GoAntiques, Inc.

Founded in 2007, WorthPoint has quickly become the largest social network for researching the worth of antiques and collectibles. More than 50,000 people registered as WorthPoint members in the company’s first nine months.

WorthPoint offers a rich multimedia experience that helps collectors understand the worth of their items, and it provides expert advice from its team of Worthologists on how to preserve or sell antiques and collectibles. Members can also share their knowledge and create online collecting communities.

Founded in 1994, by Kathy Kamnikar, as Antique Networking, GoAntiques is the oldest Web antiques-and-collectibles site. It offers 600,000 items from more than 1,300 dealers in 31 countries and the world’s largest antiques and collectibles price guide, PriceMiner®. GoAntiques logs nearly a million visits and thousands of transactions each month and has more than 350,000 registered members.

“GoAntiques is a perfect fit for WorthPoint,” WorthPoint CEO Seippel said. “It is the longest-running and most experienced antiques-and-collectibles site on the Internet and has a great staff. Combined, we will have more than 1 million visitors a month to our Web pages.

“Our acquisition of GoAntiques will accelerate our growth by introducing the antique-dealer community to WorthPoint,” said Seippel. “More importantly, it will introduce thousands of antique dealers to the thousands of homeowners who come to the WorthPoint site daily looking to sell some of their possessions.”

GoAntiques’ Kathy Kamnikar said she is thrilled to be part of the WorthPoint team. “Fifteen years ago my dream was to serve the antiques market. With Jim as President we’ve come a long way and now with WorthPoint we can go even further.”

GoAntiques’ Jim Kamnikar said: “This is a good match. WorthPoint will give us the added resources we need to expand our marketplace and provide additional value to our buyers and sellers. The people looking for assistance with estates and collections, who come to our site, will benefit greatly from having access to WorthPoint’s rapidly expanding team of experts.”

“WorthPoint represents the future of collecting worldwide, and we are happy to be part of that exciting future.”

DENVER, July 2, 2008 — (BUSINESS WIRE)–WorthPoint Corporation, a Web-based social network and search engine for collectors, announced Wednesday that it will sponsor the “American Presidential Experience” during the Democratic National Convention in Denver, August 25-28.

The announcement was made at a news conference at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver hosted by Mayor John W. Hickenlooper and members of the Denver Convention Host Committee.

“WorthPoint is proud to be a sponsor of the 2008 American Presidential Experience, an event that brings people of all political persuasions together to celebrate democracy and the history of the American Presidency,” said Will Seippel, Chairman and CEO of WorthPoint.

The touring exhibition, organized by Jim Warlick, owns the Political Americana store on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, has thrilled millions of visitors to Democracy Plaza in Rockefeller Center; the North Carolina State Fair; the American Presidential Museum in Branson, Missouri; and Presidents Park in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Warlick is an expert “Worthologist” on American Presidential memorabilia for WorthPoint.

In August in Denver, visitors to the American Presidential Experience at INVESCO Field will be able to sit behind the desk in the Oval Office, walk through the cabin of Air Force One, see collections of historical flags, Presidential documents and First Lady Inaugural Ball gowns, hear some of the great Presidential speeches in history, meet the authors of Presidential biographies and books about the Presidency, and vote for the 2008 Presidential candidate of their choice in the USA Button Poll.

“WorthPoint is sponsoring the American Presidential Experience because we believe in giving back,” Seippel told the news conference. “WorthPoint is a community of people of people around the world who collect art, antiques and collectibles. Most of us started in the collectible world because we had a fascination with history and history will be made in Denver with the Democratic convention.

“As the father of five children, I’m especially excited about the interactive exhibits that will give young people a deeper understanding of the rights and responsibilities of democracy,” said Seippel. “Years from now, people will show their children and grandchildren their photos from when they were kids on Air Force One or sitting behind the desk in the Oval office. Memorabilia from this event will be bought and sold and collectors will be doing what they always do, helping preserve the tangible aspects of our history. And WorthPoint will be there to help them.”

Virginia Business magazine
July 2008

By Lee Graves

You can’t accuse Will Seippel of escaping into his hobbies when he comes home from work. If anything, the collectibles in his Georgia home serve as the model for his business, and they provide a window into the passions of this Virginia native.

Figures and posters from “Star Wars.” A set of standard-gauge Lionel model trains. Jerseys worn by pitcher Nolan Ryan. A warm-up jacket worn by New York Yankees great Mickey Mantle. Antique black-powder muzzle-loading rifles.

They’re all an extension of the Boy Scout merit badges Seippel started collecting as a youth on trips from his home in Clifton, Va., to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. “It was a long bus ride to Philmont, and we traded badges a lot along the way,” says Seippel, 51.

Not long ago, two catalysts combined to spark Seippel’s entrepreneurial energies. The result is WorthPoint, an online resource for people who want to find the value and learn the history of antiques and collectibles.

One source of inspiration came from the vast amount of stuff the Seippels had to sort through after buying an 18th-century house in Kennebunkport, Maine. Another motivation came from a financially beleaguered woman who, in going through the belongings of her deceased mother, discarded a complete set of Ebony magazines.

“I didn’t have the nerve to tell her that all the answers to her financial problems went into a Dumpster,” Seippel says. “I just thought, ‘There’s got to be a way to help people and to build a business.’”

So Seippel, who had established a reputation for revitalizing ailing companies, started WorthPoint about a year ago. He now serves as its CEO. The database covers more than 2 million items, and the payroll has grown to about 80 employees or consultants worldwide, including “worthologists” who provide expertise in various fields. The company’s headquarters moved from Reston to Georgia Tech’s Advanced Technology Development Center this spring.

WorthPoint still has an office in Tysons Corner, and that, plus Seippel’s position as vice chairman of the business school at George Mason University, his alma mater, bring him to Virginia several times a week. “Virginia is still in my heart,” Seippel says.

The business

You name it, somebody collects it. From Beanie Babies to baseball cards, the universe of collectibles defies easy description. For some, it’s art; for some, it’s beer cans; and for others, it’s the Model A that Grandpa drove on Sundays.

That is actually one of the defining characteristics of a valuable collectible — its appeal from generation to generation — says Will Seippel, founder and CEO of WorthPoint.

Grandpa and his buddies bought Model A’s because they were popular at the time, just as Seippel once bought a souped-up Mustang. “The real question is that after my generation goes through them and has fun with them, will another generation want them?”

Online trading through companies such as eBay has revolutionized the collectibles market, which is estimated by OTCHotline.com at $120 billion worldwide. In 2006, there were 84 million active eBay users who sold more than 500 million collectibles. In addition, there were more than 100 million collectors globally and 30,000 appraisers in the United States alone.

Baseball cards, which have been collected for decades, saw a new high last year. A T206 Honus Wagner card, called the Holy Grail of baseball cards, was sold to an anonymous private collector for a record $2.8 million.

Events

July 11-13: Collectors Showcase of America Show, Dulles Expo and Conference Center, 4320 Chantilly Shopping Center, Chantilly. (540) 456-6877 or http://www.csashows.com.

Aug. 9: Horsepasture Ruritan Building Antiques and Collectibles Auction, 16197 Philpott Highway, Henry County. Old-fashioned auctions, held monthly. (276) 340-6441 or http://www.auctionzip.com.

Sept. 20-21: Tidewater Division Model Railroaders 2008 Model Train Show and Sale, Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St., Virginia Beach. (757) 426-2811 or e-mail nawneycreek [at] msn [dot] com.

Two players — online powerhouse eBay and television’s “Antiques Roadshow” — hold marquee positions in the business, but collectors have numerous other resources:

• WorthPoint — is building a database coupled with an array of “worthologists” to help people learn the value and history of antiques and collectibles. http://www.worthpoint.com.

• Collector’s Universe — provides services such as authenticating and grading high-value collectibles, including coins, sports cards, autographs, stamps, currency, diamonds and colored gemstones. http://www.collectors.com.

• National Association of Collectors — an umbrella group serving collectors and collecting clubs of all sorts. http://www.collectors.org.

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–WorthPoint, a new Web site for collectibles, helped a Colorado woman sell a painting this week that she found in the trash a decade ago for $103,000 at a Sotheby’s auction.

While rummaging through some discarded items next to a neighborhood dumpster in Boulder, Colorado, a decade ago, Tammy Bullock found an oil painting “that just looked interesting.”

She didn’t know it at the time, but the painting is by the 20th century Japanese artist Takanori Oguiss and is titled “Coin De Paris, Rue de Meaux.” Oguiss painted many Parisian and Venetian street scenes and is well known in the international art community. No one knows how the valuable painting ended up in a dumpster in Colorado.

“The colors weren’t attractive. The frame was ugly – this just wasn’t anything I’d could put on my wall and be proud of,” Bullock says. But for some unknown reason, she kept the painting in a closet in her home for 10 years.

“The painting fit in my closet — I even stored my children’s’ school papers behind it,” Bullock says. “I almost gave the painting away several times,” she recalls.

Bullock and her family moved into a new home last September, and on the day of the move she almost threw out the painting. “I was halfway down the sidewalk when a little voice told me, ‘No, don’t throw it away – it might be worth something.’”

She says that she often thought about selling the painting, but didn’t know how to go about it, until she saw a news story on a Denver television station that featured a new Web site: WorthPoint.com.

The WorthPoint Web site is for fine art, antiques and collectibles, and is designed to help people monetize things from garages and attics. People can ask members of the site for free advice on an antique or pay a WorthPoint expert – a “Worthologist” — as little as $9.95 to help them understand the value of an object and help them realize its value.

Bullock contacted Thom Pattie, WorthPoint’s Chief Worthologist, and sent him digital photos of the painting. Pattie recognized at once that the painting could be worth tens of thousands of dollars, conferred with several auction houses, and then helped her through the process of consigning it to Sotheby’s.

The painting was auctioned off on Thursday for $103,000.
Bullock is elated: “To think that I actually have something that sold at Sotheby’s is probably more exciting than getting the money.” She says she’ll give some of the money to charity, put it towards her daughter’s college education and her son’s new contact lenses — and maybe take a vacation.

“I never would have had this wonderful experience without the help of Thom Pattie and WorthPoint,” Bullock says. “And I’ll never drive by another dumpster without wondering what treasure it might hold.”

Pattie has worked in the appraisal, antiques and auction industries for 40 years. He has managed multiple regional auction houses, and has performed onsite appraisals across the U.S. for international auction houses. Pattie says that he quickly recognized the potential value of the painting and was happy to help Bullock find the right auction house.

“This is exactly the need that WorthPoint was created to fill. We provided Tammy Bullock with a Web-based information resource — and the personal attention — to help her realize her dream. She really did find a treasure in the trash.”
