Description: This gorgeous headboard and footboard with side rails has always been a conversation piece to say the least. People used to come to our home to "see" the headboard because of it's unique pictures in the burl. It looks like either an owl, a woman wearing a Victorian hat (there is a little crack the shape of a smile) or a bikini top, tummy and skirt like a hula girl. Besides it's exceptional carvings, the burl has made this piece a definite one-of-a-kind. The footboard also has an image which appears to be a curly haired man leaning as if he were blowing out birthday candles. The footboard broke away from itself approx 1/3rd of the way down from the top and dowels were put into place. It was not permanently repaired, but can be easily repaired. The side rails are beautiful as well. The set has it's original finish. There is a small amount of mildew on feet but is coming off. My mother purchased this set in the late 60's or early 70's from Josephine (Scott) Coss, whose father was the co-owner of Carson Pire Scott in Chicago and Ottawa, IL. The set also includes a 3 tiered vanity with 3 drawers each side and one large drawer at the bottom and full length mirror at the top with a matching finial ornamentation that exists on the headboard. Both can be turned upside down for lower ceilings. Set requires 9' ceilings I do believe. The marble was sadly broken by our movers and part of one piece is missing. We are working on having the marble replaced with locating period style marble at this time. Dealers and master-craftsmen have viewed this piece over the years and have noted that even with it's flaws it is still in lovely condition and it's design in the burl the beauty of the wood is still exceptional. Condition: Original finish. In excellent conditon with minute flaws. Footboard can be repaired and break is not noticable from front of bed even with dowels.
