Smith & Shaw Closed Cell Pocket Battery
The polished wood case measures 7 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 1 3/4". The instructions inside the lid describe a typical bisuphate of mercury battery, however the battery present is an early dry cell. The battery fits the contacts. The set includes two (2) batteries with an engraving that says: Patented March 25th 1884. The wooden box is in good condition with no breaks. The bottom of the wooden case is lined with antique fabric. The set includes a red cord and a green cord, a contact. The rheostat slide is in great condition. The on and off switch on the side operates perfectly. The inside lid has paper directions attached with all the directions perfectly ledgible. The top portion of the inner lid has a label which reads: The Smith & Shaw Closed Cell Pocket Battery, manufactured by The Smith & Shaw Electric Co., 435 Seventh Ave, NY.
An ad found in the Dietic and Hygienic Gazette, Volume 2, issue 4 reads: "Smith & Shaw Electric Company. Gents; The beauty of your Battery is that it can be run either as a single or double cell battery, and, in order to show you what the profession here think of it, we hand you herewith the opinion of one of our customers, a very thorough and careful physician.
Messrs. J. B. & J. E. Hendricks. Dear Sirs : Your inquiry about the Smith & Shaw Closed Cell Pocket Battery received. Where an induced current of high tension is required, I can not see but what it could be substituted for the more clumsy and cosily batteries; while so far as pocket batteries are concerned, I believe the -Smith & Shaw Closed Cell is as near perfection as this decade will witness. Yours,
W. V. Morgan, M. D."

Jacob Blattner Scarificator/Bleeder & Cupping
Antique Medical Cupping Set w/brass Scarificator/ Bleeder & Original Mahogany wood case.
The set includes 3 glass cups to be used with brass syringe. Included is a 12 blade scarificator/bleeder. 2 Brass connnectors for syringe with stop cock. The mahogany box is lined with purple velvet. The wood case is a bit faded as is the purple velvet liner. Inside the box is a tag that reads: Jacob Blattner, Optician, No. 44 Market St, St. Louis, Mo, No. aso iso.
Jacob Blattner arrived to Missouri in the fall of 1839 from Berne, Switzerland. He was a renowned mathematical instrument maker with unique artisanship in compasses and medical devices. In 1840 he established Blattner & Adam in St. Louis Missouri. His works are a rare find.
