Golden Oak Partners' Desk
This is a stunningly unique golden oak partners', ca. the turn of the 20th century.
The piece exemplifies the taste of Early American furniture that adapted the then current English style in utilitarian form and utilized wood native to the United States. While Phyfe, Savery and John Goddard and other expert cabinetmakers specialized in walnut and mahogany, the late 19th century saw an expression of flamboyant taste in golden oak of rococo design; this was followed by a reaction in the United States to the Mission style of rectilinear construction in oak. The desk appears unsigned but profound in its simplicity and can be seen as a synthesis of American Shaker and the English Arts and Crafts Movement.
Purchased after a long period of storage in a mid-western historic furniture repository, the desk features finely tapered legs that are capped in brass. The drawer pulls are brass lions heads.
On each side of the desk is a central drawer and adjacent two smaller drawers; the two lower drawers on each side are false fronts and do not open.
The size (30"h x 28"d x 42"w) of this wonderful piece of Americana reveals the dramaticly straight line designs reminiscent of the Stickley furniture of the early 20th century, when a stylish wave of little-adorned pieces were designed for fashionable homes.

Lunt Silversmiths was originally incorporated in 1902 as the Rogers, Lunt and Bowlen Co., and with the exception of the WWII years, has made sterling flatware in New England continuously since then. It is the successor to the A.F. Towle Company, first established in Greenfield, Massachusetts in the late 1800's. In 1902 Lunt took ownership of the silver manufacturing business and continued to sell patterns originally made by its predecessor.
All of the patterns from the early days of both companies were made under the design supervision of Rogers, Lunt and Bowlen Co. George C. Lunt began his career in the silver industry as an engraver for A.F. Towle.
