7 VHS Video Box Set New Still in shrinkwrap. A wonderful walk down memory lane or a way to become a new fan. Tapes cover a wide range of favorite Liberace topics. Total Running Time: Approximately 6 Hours Black & White - VHS ISNB #1-57622-519-4 011301352231 Flamboyant pianist "Lee" Liberace had a network television program, The Liberace Show , beginning on July 1, 1952 and remained a TV headliner until 1969. Producer Duke Goldstone mounted a filmed version for syndication in 1955 , and sold it to scores of local stations. The widespread exposure of the syndicated Liberace series made the pianist more popular and prosperous than ever. His brother George often appeared as guest violinist. Liberace signed off each broadcast with the song " I'll Be Seeing You ". This show was also one of the first to be shown on UK commercial television in the 1950s w it was broadcast on Sunday afternoons by Lew Grade 's ATV company. This exposure gave Liberace a dedicated following in the UK. With his own unique one-to-one relationship with the viewers, Liberace soon became television's first matinee idol. Starting with his piano debut as a soloist with the Chicago symphony orchestra at the age of 16, his live shows toured the world. In the United States he played to over-capacity crownd at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall in New York City, The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Chicago's Soldiers Field. "Mr. Showmanship" opened in the Las Vegas Rivera hotel as the highest paid entertainer in the city's history. The audience loved him...especially the women. The critics were not kind, but "Lee" did not mind. "I cried", he remarked "all the way to the bank". Liberace became known for his extravagant, outlandish and very expensive costumes, curly hair, pearly tooth smile, personal charm, and self-deprecating wit and a flowery piano style. His public image became linked with one ever-present stage prop, an ornate imitation Louis XIVsilver candelabrum perched on his Steinway piano. By 1955 he was making $50,000 per week at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and had over 160 official fan clubs with a quarter of a million member fans (who throughout his career were mostly middle-aged women). He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his contributions to the television industry.
