1932 California license plates?

I just got some 1932 California license plates.

Thing is that the Ebay pricing on these is all over the place. I am talking about anywhere from $35 all the way up to $550.

I guess the question is what is the market for this? Is the market so small that they might not be worth much of anything? Or?

Also, how important is it that these be "cleared" by the DMV that is to say the numbers are not currently in use and therefore they can be registered to an actual old car.

I would assume that if they are cleared by DMV that they would be worth a whole lot more money?
