    Question NEW in the Business

My husband and I are starting our own antiques and interior design company in Chattanoog TN. We have collected antiques and one of a kind items for years as a hobby but are still learning the ropes as dealers. Niether of us are trained specialist, we just know what we like and Stephen, my husband, has an excellent eye for the very old and very unique treasures that most people do not even reallize they have. Recently we have aquired a chineese altar table. According to my research it is from the Ming dynasty and made from rosewood. This piece is held together by wooded pegs and is in great condition but I have no idea how to price this item. My belief has always been that the value of any item is in just how much that "right" person will pay for something they love. However, I would like some idea of a starting asking price for this unique piece and really cant afford an appraisal as all of our money has been invested into our dream business. Can anyone help?

Could you please post some photos and give some more details and dimensions. Also include any marks or labels. I can then have an expert take a look. Thanks!

I, too, have an antiques business and was a collector for decades! Evaluating Asian antiques is a world unto itself; their history is more complex than Western Civilizations'. I suggest you contact an art museum - start in your area and then expand from there. Google "Asian Art Curators". Next, search for Museums featuring a special show on Asian items (you might talk to the curator and send photos). Most professionals will be happy to share their knowledge or point you in the right direction. Good Luck, Francine
