Japanese Porcelain Wedding plate
Hi Everyone...I have a plate that was given to my great grandparents on their wedding in Oct. 1888. It is the last??? of a set of handmade wedding plates given to them by their Japanese neighbors, in Monrovia California...would anyone know anything about it??? Thanks so much for your time!

If your great grandparents received it as a gift in 1888 from a Japanese couple then it must date from before that. Looking at the pictures it isn't clear to me if it is Chinese or Japanese. The motif and brush work look more Chinese to me. In the middle of the 19th. century in Japan Chinese porcelain was available and valued, that is to say, the couple who gave it to your great grandparents probably went to the U.S. after 1868 when Japan re-opened. They would have brought items that were valuable to them and both Japanese and Chinese porcelain were valued.
