    What is it?

I bought this at a yard sale. I have no idea what it is. The person selling it said that it belonged to his late mother and she collected old stuff. It's made of brass I believe, and stands 22" tall. The weird looking scissor thing looks like it has a container to put something into. Can anybody tell me what it is and if it has any real value other than just looking unique? I'm a newbie on here so any info would really be appreciated.

That is a brass 4 burner whale oil lamp. Believe it or not it is said whale oil did not have a strong smell. Whale oil lamps were expensive and used by the wealthy. I bet with 4 burners it put out quite a bit of light. Whale oil as lamp fuel fell out of favor about the time the civil war began .

Wow. I never heard of such a thing. Do you know what the scissor attachment was used for? Thank you so much for your answer on this item!

There would have been a wick in each of the four burners. The scissors were to trim the wick. The box like feature on the scissors held the trimmed wick, to keep it from falling back into the oil. The other item attached was used to snuff the flame.
Is it a family piece or something you purchased?

I bought it at a yard sale. The guy who sold it had no idea what it was and neither did I, but it looked cool, so I had to have it.
