A Canadian art dealer bought a portrait for $19,000 two years ago has turned out to be a good investment, indeed, as the work has been determined to be a piece by Leonardo Da Vinci and was valued at $150 million.

The work—a portrait of a young woman’s profile in chalk, pen and ink on vellum—was put through carbon dating and infrared examinations, as well as a fingerprint compared with an authenticated Da Vinci, convinced experts that the portrait was a genuine Da Vinci.

“It all sounded too good to be true—after 40 years in the Leonardo business, I thought I’d seen it all,” one art professor told the Times of London. As his research continued, though, “all the bits fell into place like a well-made piece of furniture. All the drawers slotted in.” The portrait is the first major Da Vinci find in more than a century.
