Well, maybe not equally huge, but pretty big. Publisher and president of DC Comics Paul Levitiz is stepping down after seven years. The announcement came with the news that DC would be reorganizing and will now be known as DC Entertainment. The new DCE will focus on strategically exploiting the DC brand across all media, such as video games and feature film.

DCE will be piloted by new incoming president Diane Nelson, who had recently served as president of Warner Premiere, the company responsible for direct-to-DVD releases like Green Lantern First Flight and the Harry Potter franchise. Is this big news? I guess. Is it good news? That remains to be seen. Unlike the Disney/Marvel merger, which sees Marvel operating just as they were before the merger, DC has a new president in charge, albeit one who admittedly doesn’t know much about comics. Now, don’t panic yet, as DC is looking for a new publisher, too. I would nominate either Mark Waid or Jimmy Palmioti, and hopefully DC will find one well-versed in the comic world. I would guess that Nelson’s duties will focus on movies and games, but until a new publisher is announced, I’ll remain nervous. A good friend of mine called me shortly after this story hit the Internet asking me if I had heard the news and was I excited to hear Levitiz was stepping down? I’ve been very critical of DC comics in the past but I don’t know if Paul Levitiz has been the problem. In all the criticism I read from creators who have left DC, or who had been fired, I don’t see Levitz’s name coming up as much as someone else’s. I guess we’ll see where DC goes from here but I can only hope the changing of the guard doesn’t end with its president.

Here’s a list of the comics I’ll be picking up this Thursday, Sept. 10. The Unwritten #5

Thoughts on the pile: Needless to say, it’s a huge week. Each week I type this list and then leave the shop with at least three more titles. It’s killing my wallet. As usual, I’m still very happy with the Dark Reign stuff and am looking forward to both the conclusion of the Dark Avengers/X-men book and the New Avengers: The List. Doom Patrol #1 was a pleasant surprise, so I’m in for at least six issues. When Kieth Giffen is “on” he’s one of the best writers in the business. I’m giving Rob Lefelid’s Bucky (Nomad) one issue to wow me. Sean McKeever is hit-and-miss with me, but I’m always willing to give him a shot due to my love of his Sentinel series (Marvel 2003). Red Robin is a title that I was initially very excited for, but as of issue #3 I’m waiting for the story to kick in. I’m not quitting yet, mainly due to my love of the Tim Drake character, but I need more if I’m going to stick around past issue #6. I can’t stress how much I’m enjoying the IDW Star Trek stuff that ties into the latest film. If you loved the movie you will love the comics. And finally, The Unwritten is the best new Vertigo series I’ve read in years. I was a big fan of Mike Carey’s Lucifer series and am happy to be reading another great Carey Vertigo series.

Here’s a look at my Speculator Picks of the Week. These are comics that could sell out very quickly and re-emerge at twice the price on the back-issue market.

A list of things that are wrong with the world. Things that he needs to take care of. And the list includes almost every major player in the Marvel Universe. These specials are exciting game changers for all of Marvel Comics and represent the finest talents. This first chapter has a startling confrontation between members of the New Avengers and Dark Avengers.
Why it’ll go fast: Word on the street is something big is going to happen in this issue. Something so big that it’ll have the nerds talking and presumably buying the other Dark Reign the list titles. Marvel has had a recent history of starting off these events with a bang and it wouldn’t even surprise me to see someone die unexpectedly in this issue. Most retailers have been seeing a bit of what could be called event exhaustion with the Dark Reign titles, mainly due to the glut of DR titles. I’m sure orders will still be high on this one but not as high as on the initial Dark Reign titles. Even if it’s this month’s highest selling title, which it won’t be, I’m betting it still sells out.

Why it’ll go fast: I’ve only been reading the IDW Star Trek stuff that ties into the recent movie but I’ve heard that it’s all been great. Retailers, however, are still not sold on Star Trek comics. Star Trek: Spock Reflections was the highest selling Star Trek comic last month and it only shipped 10,256 copies and checked in at #189 on the top 300 most ordered comics list. I would guess that Nero will ship even less. Lets face it, Eric Bana is good looking but he’s no Leonard Nimoy.

Vampirella Second Coming #1: Harris Comics

Solicitation: Like Marilyn Monroe and Betty Page, Vampirella is a cultural phenomenon now woven into society’s DNA, a symbol of sensuality and power. So thinks a group of women who become increasingly and inexplicably fascinated with her, getting Vampi tattoos, researching her story and seeking each other out to celebrate her. But as a virus ravages Washington, possessing any man it comes across and liberating their darkest desires, these women feel a call from something—or someone—to battle this new threat. Is Vampirella real after all?

Why it’ll go fast: The only reason I knew this comic was coming was because I follow writer Phil Hester on Twitter. To be honest, I didn’t even know Harris Comics was still around. Well they are, and so is the (bikini clad?) Vampirella, only this time she’s being written by a truly talented comic writer. It’s probably been since the mid-90s anyone paid more than cover price for a Vamiprella comic, but I feel like this one could be hot. Not just because I like the writer or because I want to see if anyone is still reading this blog. No, it’s got a great cover and an even better premise. If anyone can make Vampi readable I’m guessing it’s Phil Hester.

Nerdy question of the week:

Let’s here your vote for the new publisher of DC comics. Mine is with Mark Waid and it’s not just because he’ll immediately fire Dan Didio as the editor-in-chief. The guy has been around and he knows what we want. Agree? Disagree? Lets here your candidates.

Batman is back! Sort of … In what is slated to be the comic book event of the summer (until next month’s Captain America #600), Dick Grayson—the first Robin—dons the cowl after Bruce Wayne’s “death” in issue #1 of the new Batman and Robin series. Instead of drumming up some buzz by dropping a line to the news media (like Marvel is doing with Cap #600), DC is offering the most expensive incentive cover ever. Really, most expensive ever. Not because it’s the best variant cover ever—it’s just a sketch version of the regular Frank Quietly cover—but because to get one you have to order 250 of the regular issue. Ladies and gentleman the first 1:250 variant cover and already retailers are asking ridiculous prices. The prize for “Most Expensive” goes to the two guys selling the variant for $479 on eBay. I’ll be watching these auctions very closely to see if they actually sell, which they won’t.

Truth be told, when pricing an incentive cover like this I would say the rules fly out the window. I guess I should mention the rules first. Here’s generally how incentive variants get priced: When ordering comics sometimes retailers are offered an incentive cover that will be given to them free based on how many of the regular issues they ordered. For this example, we’ll use a 1:10 variant. Basically, the retailer would take the cover price, divided by their discount, times the number of issues needed to receive the variant. So if the retailer is buying 10 issues at $2.99 minus their 50-percent discount, it’s fair to price the variant at around $15, although most 1:10 variants sell for about $7 to $10 (I blame the economy). So in our Bat-situation it would be fair to charge exactly $373.75. Right? No. And $479 is even more insane. If you’re in the market for one of these variants, I wouldn’t pay more than $150. I just can’t see it guiding for much more than $200 anytime soon.

Enough of this “incentive cover” talk. Let’s look at this week’s comics shipping on Wednesday, June 3. Below you’ll the list of comics I’ll be picking up this week. For a complete list of this week’s new comics click here. Secret Six #10
War of Kings #4 of 6

Thoughts on the pile: First of all: Shame on everyone that didn’t pick up Captain Britain and M.I. 13 resulting in the title’s cancellation. You are all to blame. Still having ton’s of fun with Bendis’ Dark Avengers. Mighty Avengers, it is starting to find its legs. A good friend of mine called the comic “surprisingly old-fashioned” and I agree. It really does read like a Silver-Age comic. I’m just not sure if I love it yet. New Mutants could be a good time and my love of the characters should carry me through to at least issue 6, even if the story is terrible. Greg Rucka and James Robinson’s Supes W.O.N.K. (best abbreviation ever) is one of the best stories I’ve read in a while and an excellent new take on the Man of Steel. Not a huge week but definitely a good one.

Now it’s time for my Speculator Picks of the Week. These are comics that could sell out quick and send the uninformed collector hunting. Get them while you can or pay twice as much later.

So why am writing about this issue? Because the 1:25 variant cover by J.G. Jones is amazing. After last years Final Crisis debacle, when he was unable to finish the series for reasons that are still unclear, Jones lost a lot of fans. But not me. I still love you J.G. Because of the buzz behind this book and the 1:250 incentive variant there should be a good amount of the 1:25 variants out there, but that doesn’t mean they won’t sell out fast.

Why it’ll go fast: Now that Captain Britain has been canceled, expect to see orders on the last few issues to sink even lower. Years from now, when Paul Cornell has been elevated to comic super-star-status, people will look back on his run and say “You know, that Matt Baum was right.” (In my hypothetical future I have a cable news show that discusses comics not unlike Larry King; suspenders and al.) “This Capt Britain title was excellent. How did this get cancelled?” It’s a damn shame is what it is. I’m betting this annual sells out at most shops before the end of Wednesday. Don’t expect to see heavy reorders on this issue either.

Solicitation: A comic book industry event: a new original ongoing superhero series from Mark Waid! IRREDEEMABLE dares to ask the question: what if the world’s greatest hero decided to become the world’s greatest villain? Does Plutonion’s past hold the key to his current deadly rampage? Or does it even matter? A “twilight of the superheroes”-style story that examines super-villains from the writer of KINGDOM COME and EMPIRE!

Why it’ll go fast: Mark Waid has scored another hit with his latest offering from Boom Studios. One problem; Boom can’t print its comics at even close to the numbers of the Big 2 (Marvel and DC). So what happens when a Boom title gets as much good press as Irredeemable is? It’s nearly impossible to find. Issue #1 is already selling for $12 and up, with variants going for even more.

Solicitation: In 1991, Adrian Tomine self-published the first issue of Optic Nerve. Consisting of three Xeroxed sheets of paper, and with a print run of 25, it was a less-than-auspicious, largely unnoticed debut. In the following three years, though, Optic Nerve developed at a startlingly rapid pace: The artwork and writing evolved with each story, production quality improved, page counts increased, and by issue seven, sales had reached 6,000. In 1994, Drawn & Quarterly took over the publishing duties of Optic Nerve, and the original seven issues sold out and were left out of print. 32 Stories presents these rare, early editions, collected for the first time in a single volume.

Why You Should Care: Tomine’s work is widely regarded as some of the best autobiographical comics being published today. His art, like his writing, is realistic, powerful, and sublime in its familiarity. Besides, it’s good to have something that will add a little emotional heft to a guy’s comic collection. You never know who will be checking out your book shelves.

Nerdy Question of the Week:

This is not a question for variant collectors; we all know you guys have better jobs, more money and a sickness that fuels you. This question is for the casual variant buyer. What is it you look for in your variant covers? Myself; I just can’t get past great art. This week’s J.G. Jones Batman and Robin variant is a perfect example.

Thanks again for your continued input and keep the answers to the nerdy questions coming.

This Week in Geek is a weekly blog about new comics written by WorthPoint Comic book Worthologist Matt Baum. Every Wednesday, Matt takes a look at the week’s new comics from a collector’s point-of-view and discusses which books may be hard to find in the near future and why. Make sure to click on the hot links for previews and more information on the comics, characters, story-lines and creators discussed here. Also, feel free to post your comments in the new “comments” section below.

Before we get started let’s talk housekeeping. I’ve received a few e-mails detailing some problems with finding older “This Week” blogs, problems with posting comments and even some problems with getting in contact with me. I assure you I’ve read all your emails and forwarded them to the proper geeks and have been reassured by those same geeks that problems are in the process of being solved. There’s a lot of changes coming down the WorthPoint-pipe real soon here (no I’m not being replaced, as far as I know anyway) and they are all for the benefit of you guys. Stick around and you’ll see.

With that out of the way let’s talk comics. The yearly comic sales numbers have been released and it seems, once again, Marvel stomped DC in comic sales while DC whupped Marvel in Trade-Paper-Back sales. All in all not very surprising as Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” seems to have been a rollicking sales and critical success. The fans spoke with their wallets and bought a lot more Marvel Comics than DC. The numbers don’t lie. However, does sales success translate to collectivity? The short answer is maybe. For more on this question check out my other blog, “The Comic Speculator” where I’ll be taking a look at Marvel’s last big crossover event, “Civil War,” to try and predict where prices on the “Secret Invasion” comics will sit after the dust settles. Look for that blog later this week.

For now let’s take a look at this week’s new comics. Here’s my pile if comics for the week of Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009. As always, I welcome your criticism, praise or threats of bodily harm based on what I am or am not reading/collecting. You may have noticed a new section below where you can respond to this article, it’s the perfect place to agree with or lash out at me for all to see! (No rhyme intended) For a complete list of this week’s new comics click here. To find a comic shop near you click here.

Action Comics #873
B.P.R.D.: The Black Goddess #1 of 5
Captain Britain and MI: 13 #9
DMZ #38
Faces of Evil: Prometheus
Final Crisis #6 of 7
Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #2 of 2
Green Lantern Corps #32
Nightwing #152
Punisher: War Zone #5 of 6
X-Infernus #2 of 4

Now let’s talk speculation. As you may or may not know, the purpose of this blog is to arm the comic nerd with the information he or she needs to make an informed and quality new comic purchase every week. While they might not be worth piles of money, these issues may be pretty hard to find in the near future.

Amazing Spiderman #583, Obama Variant

Amazing Spiderman #583, Obama Variant; Marvel Comics; Written by Mark Waid; Art by Barry Kitson, Back up story Written by Zeb Wells; Art by Todd Nauck; 32 pages $3.99.

Solicitation: YOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT IT! PETER PARKER ON A DATE! After the revelations of “Mind on Fire,” love is in the air for more than one member of the cast, and Pete finally gets some time out with the ladies (and who better to bring it to you than two men who both had dates as recently as 1987!?!). Amidst the romance, though, forces are gathering that will spell trouble for Peter in the months to come. And, to celebrate the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama, Marvel is proud to present an all-new story teaming up one of the world’s most recognizable political figures with the world’s greatest super hero, as President-Elect Obama joins Spider-Man in “Spidey Meets the President!”

Why it’ll go fast: As you may recall, a few months ago Batman may or may not have died in the pages of Batman as part of the “RIP” storyline. This issue prompted me to predict a huge sellout on the basis that DC would drop a press release to media sources everywhere, hoping the news papers and networks would pick up on the story and send people everywhere to their nearest comic shop to see how Batman dies. Well it didn’t happen. Whether DC dropped the ball on this one or no one cared, we may never know. Marvel on the other hand seems to have their PR dept in marching order and already this week CNN, NPR, and USA TODAY have run stories about Spidey meeting Obama in the pages of Amazing Spidey #583. Already pre-sales for the issue on eBay are going for $30-$50 and with the announcement of a second printing of the Variant cover it would seem the entire first print-run is spoken for before hitting the stands. Retailers had to order more of the regular cover of #583 than they did of Amazing Spidey #575 to be eligible to order the Obama variant. If they surpassed their order of #575, then the sky’s the limit; order as many Obama Variant as you want, although there’s no guarantee you’ll receive them all. The distribution of the variants seems to be a mystery, and the rumor of a10,000- to 20,000-print-run will make this comic extremely hot and hard to find. I wonder how a Sarah Palin variant would sell?

Faces of Evil: Prometheus

Faces of Evil: Prometheus; DC; Written by Sterling Gates; Art by Federico Dallocchio; Cover by Mauro Cascioli; 32 pages; $2.99.

Solicitation: It’s an all-new prelude to the upcoming, all-new JUSTICE LEAGUE #1! Prometheus once defeated the Justice League single-handedly, and with his latest lethal crime spree, he’s moved to the top of the heroes’ Most Wanted list. But what grave crimes has he committed, and what will he do to prevent capture? Learn the real face of evil that is Prometheus!

Why it’ll go fast: I love the current Faces of Evil event, but sadly, am still awaiting last week’s FOE: Grundy issue due to a shipping error at Diamond Comics. I’m still trying to get a solid answer on who was affected by this shipping error and will let you know as soon as I do. That aside, FOE takes a look at the villains that will be making problems fot the DC heroes in the coming year and Prometheus is one of my favorites. Writer Sterling Gates has been doing great work on the current Supergirl run and I’m excited to see how he brings Prometheus back to the DC villains “A-list.” While the numbers for orders on the first FOE issue aren’t available yet, I’m guessing this issue will be ordered much lower than the Geoff Johns Grundy issue based on the fact that, though he’s great, Sterling Gates isn’t a huge name yet.

X-Infernus #2 of 4

X-Infernus #2 of 4; Marvel Comics; Written by C.B. Cebulski; Art by Giuseppe Camuncol; Cover by David Finch; 32 pages; $3.99.

Solicitation: Darkchilde comes calling to the X-Men’s doorstep—and she’s not leaving without her Soulsword. The next pulse-pounding issue by C.B. Cebulski (LONERS, Drain) and Giuseppe Cammuncoli (MS. MARVEL, Intimates) is here and it’s shaking up the X-Men in a big way.

Why it’ll go fast: X-Men mini-series haven’t had the best reputation for sales or quality for quite a while now, however, X-Infernus seems to be the exception to the rule. Issue one was GREAT! I love the character of Magik, Illyana Rasputin (Colossus’ little sister), and can’t wait for her to return to the Marvel U (sans goat legs). I’m not the only nerd that loved this story, fans bought issue #1 by the fistful causing an instant sell-out at the printer and a second and third printing. If you can find issue X-Infernus #1 pick it up along with issue #2. It’s good fun for fans of both the now classic New Mutants, and the more recent New X Men Academy X.

The Indy book of the Week pick will return next week. For this week, I’m introducing yet another new section to stir up some discussion. It’s called the The Nerdy Question of the Week, where I’ll pose a question to you the reader and hopefully you’ll respond. Responses can come via email or using the “comments” section at below. This weeks question comes from a discussion a friend of mine and I had this past weekend.

If you had to reduce your pile to one comic a month (just one title) what comic would it be?

Post you answers below or feel free to e-mail them to me.

Until next week, keep the questions coming. Also, check out my other blog The Comic Speculator, where I discuss new and classic yet still affordable back-issue comics. If you have any questions about these books or anything else in the comic book world feel free to contact me or post your question in the Comic Book community forum. Want to know what your comics are worth? Join WorthPoint for free and post your titles in the “Ask A Question” section. Remember to post the title, issue number and cover price.

I know I know. I’m late. New comic day was yesterday and I was coming home from a short vacation. I beg your collective forgiveness and promise it won’t happen again, mainly because I’m not paid enough to vacation more than once every five years or so. Plenty of news this week. DC launched it’s latest weekly series ”Trinity” much to the chagrin of many disillusioned fans. Personally I plan on checking out issue 1 because I like the idea of the book. You can click on the link for review and possibly a warning. I’m not sure what’s going on at the DC editorial office but one thing is for certain, summer is here and they still seem to be playing ball like its spring.

Enough all ready let’s talk speculator picks!

House of Mystery #2, DC Vertigo, Written by Matthew Sturges and Bill Willingham with art by Luca Rossi
I really enjoyed issue one of HOM and yes, picked it to sell out as well in a previous column. Little did I know how under-ordered HOM #1 would be. Comicbookresources.com reported that initial sales on issue #1 were lower than DC expected. How low? We’ll have to wait until DC releases it’s May sales numbers to know for sure. One thing is for certain, the orders for issue #2 will be even lower. Which is too bad because HOM is certainly interesting so far. Plenty of other Vertigo books have had trouble finding their legs, Fables and Exterminators are perfect examples, I’m guessing HOM will follow suit. Two years from now we’ll be making fun of everyone that has to pay $20.00 for issue #1 and $100.00 for #2.

Secret Invasion #3, Marvel, Written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Lenil Yu
Secret Invasion continues to deliver excellent storytelling paired with top-notch art talent. Not to mention that the last page of this issue was the single best comic page I’ve seen in years. SI #3 is a landmark issue. I can’t tell you why, because I don’t do spoilers here, but trust me the last page is worth the price of admission. Normally I don’t espouse the value of variant covers because they are really hard to speculate on, but I will say that the variant for SI #3 is hard to resist. Issues #1 and #2 have already sold out and, though they are still readily available at most comic shops, because of the popularity and brilliant execution of this crossover event SI is going to be a hot back issue seller for years to come. Yes I’m gushing, but it’s for good reason, this might be the best crossover event I’ve ever read. I suggest you do the same.

Scream Queen #1, Boom Studios, Written by Brendan Hay with art by Nate Watson
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this is my first pick from Boom Studios. I like the direction Boom is moving in and bringing a guy like Mark Waid in as the editor-in-chief lends them some serious geek credit. I’m picking up Scream Queen because it’s written by Daily Show and ,b>Frank TV writer Brendan Hay and when comic companies bring in established writers good stories tend to follow. I’m picking this book as a potential sell out because retailers aren’t yet convinced of Boom’s selling abilities so you can bet that orders are low. The average around town seems to be 4 copies per store.

Well there’s plenty of comics to drop your cash on this week and this is, of course, just a couple of them. I’m also real exited about the current Night Wing issue and the Robin Spoiler Special. What about you guys?
