You have an antique and you want to know more about it. How do you know where to start and what to ask?

For many years, alright too many years to confess to, I hosted a very popular radio show that actually gave appraisals over the radio. Yes, you ask, how did you do that? Well, by educating people to look, for perhaps the first time, at the things that were in front of them. I pointed out salient, identifiable marks that would help me assess the age, maker, uniqueness and ultimately the value of the piece. I walked the caller through the process hundreds/thousands of times.

I’m happy to share what I’ve learned. To all of you who have chosen Worthpoint as your source for Q&A and evaluations, I say: when writing in with a question be specific.

For example, let’s talk about dishes. Here’s the question as I’ve seen similar questions posted: “I have some Limoges china what’s it worth?”

Here is what is going through an evaluators mind when he/she reads it:

- what kind of Limoges china, are we talking a set of dishes?

- if so, what does the set consist of – plates, cups and saucers, vegetable serving dishes,

- what is the pattern name, if any,

- describe the decoration of the piece/pieces,

- does it say Haviland, does it say Limoge, or France on the bottom of the plate,

- does it say anything else that would help the evaluator give you the answer/ valuation that you are looking for?

- condition, are there any chips, dings, crazing in the glaze, knife scratches on the finish – yes, you can see them without subjecting the piece to a black light, (what’s a black light? we’ll talk about that another time).

You see what I mean.

Here is a better way to ask the question regarding Limoges porcelain. “I have a complete service of twelve Limoges dishes. They are marked on the bottom with Limoges, France and another name Lippincott and Company. There is no pattern name on the bottom but the dishes are decorated with blue forget-me-nots. In addition to the place settings that consist of dinner/lunch/bread and butter/bone dish/cup and sauce/tea cup and saucer, I have a coffee pot, creamer and sugar with lid,two vegetable dishes without lids, and three graduated serving platters, the largest being 18″ inches wide and the smallest 12″. All seem to be in excellent condition with no visible signs of wear. They belonged to my grandmother who received them as a wedding gift in 1918. Any help you can give on the value of the collection would be greatly appreciated.”

This may seem like a lot of work to you, but, boy does it make my life easier. And the benefit to you is that you will get a much better and more specific answer.

I’m looking forward to your questions, and I promise I won’t send them back to you with editorial suggestions.

Issue: E-mail Notification for AaQ and AaW
Members posting questions and “answers to questions” (AaQ & AaW) should have the option to get an email everything someone responds. The default should be to be notified, and the member should be able to turn the notification on/off after posting the questions/answer.

Solution: Notify Module

This module is developed to give solution to the issue stated above. Basically it does meet the general requirements to solve the problem. In addition, some features were added to give users the ease in using the capability of the module, which will be discussed one by one later.

The scope of this module satisfies the general issue. However, it is limited to AaQ and AaW for the meantime (as requested). Yet, the module itself is ready to be extended as other node types were included in the system settings.

Features:

1. Notify me checkbox. This checkbox is the prime turnaround for this module to be used. It is located at the bottom in every question and worthologist-question node type instance. By enabling this checkbox, the notification for this post is turned on. Everytime this post receive a respond, an email will be sent to the post author containing the following:

2. E-mail Notification. An e-mail notification will be sent to the post author for every response received by his post (question and ask a worthologist). The e-mail comes in plain text but an HTML form is ready to be deployed by user’s preference. Basically, plain text is much better as far as formality and adaptability (for every kind of webmail). The email contains the following:
a. Title of the post that received a comment.
b. Name and email address of the responder.
c. Subject of response
d. Body of response
e. Link of the original
f. Link to post own comment on your post
g. Explication on email reception
h. Link to manage notifications

3. My Notifications Page. This page is created to manage user’s notifications. In a tabular form contains the title of the nodes whose notification is turned on in the first column, the type of node for second column, and operation in the third. The user can turn off notification of a specific node by selecting the X button that corresponds the selected node. A confirmation will be displayed whether to continue operation or not before the process is continued. Cancel will undo changes and Continue will do the necessary process before leading to updated Notifications Page.

4. My Notifications Block and Link. Blocks containing the link to My Notifications Page is displayed at “answers” and “answers/*” (every page under answers). A link is also available on member profile.

——————————————–

This module was pushed to production around February this month. Search for update of this module in this blog community.

Recently I have been contacted by a couple of members that were confused as to what information I would need to help them in figuring out what kind of comics they had and how much they were worth. This got me thinking. I’ve noticed that there isn’t a currently a Worthologist question format for each category so I decided to make one just for comics.

If you are posting a comic book question the best way to get it answered quickly is to post the name of the book along with the issue number, publisher, date of publication and cover price in the title of the question.

For example;

Title: House of Secrets #92, DC Comics, 1971, .15 cents

The publication date can usually be found at the bottom of the inside cover or on the first page.

In the body of the question you can then post your actual question.

For example;

I was wondering what this book is worth? Please help!

At this point I have all the information I generally need to give this person a solid guess as to what they have and how much the book sells for in varying conditions.

so remember, use the title to give me the vital information (title, issue number, publisher, publication date, cover price). If you can’t figure one of these things out just give me as much as you can. A title and issue number is a great start and will speed your response greatly.

You can also post your question in the forum section of the comic books community but make sure to post in the questions section as well.

Thanks

With the onset of new web2.0 technologies, the possibilities of rich user experience in websites is next to limitless. WorthPoint is also catching on the this new technological wave and does so with flair!

WorthPoint can now be present in individual user home/web pages through widgets. Any visitor will have a great preview of random items that are on auction. For now the category remains the same for the widget but additional options such as category selection, widget skins and more are already on the works!

To see a preview of the widget in action, I pasted the embed code right on this blog. You should see it below:
