A word of warning before we get started; last night I was kept awake by spring thunderstorms and a crying Pug ,so today’s blog is fueled by way too much coffee. Sorry if things get a little punchy.

New Comics Round-Up:

Gathered here before you, in this very blog, lay all the information you could possibly want on the new comics shipping this Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Pick them up while you can or pay too much for them later.

Invincible Returns #1: Image

Why it’ll go fast: Just as the solicitation says, this is the perfect jumping-on point for everyone who missed out the first time. Everyone, including me. Being a one-shot, I’m guessing retailers order much lower on this issue than the regular series. People are going to pick this one up and then retailers are going to desperately re-order. Then the re-orders will be allocated because of all the other re-orders. Then the nerds scurry to the Internet looking for copies and the circle of life continues. And there’s a quick anatomy of a sell-out.

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1: Marvel

S.H.I.E.L.D. #1

Solicitation: Leonardo Da Vinci was an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. So was Isaac Newton. So were Imhotep and Zhang Heng and Galileo and many other geniuses throughout time. They were the first heroes to defeat Galactus and the Brood and to turn Celestials back. They saved the world long before Captain America or Iron Man were ever born, but what does this mean to our heroes of today? What does this mean to Nick Fury? Do not miss this Marvel Comics masterpiece that fans will be talking about for decades to come. All the insanity is courtesy of Jonathan Hickman (Fantastic Four, Secret Warriors, Nightly News) and Dustin Weaver (X-men). Rated T.

Why it’ll go fast: Jonathan Hickman has been blowing up on Fantastic Four and Secret Warriors for a while now but is only just now starting to get real fan recognition. His FF has been selling out on a monthly basis but still isn’t selling in the top 20 comics. In February FF was number 41 on the top 300 comics ordered list shipping 37,526 copies. My guess is retailers will order S.H.I.E.L.D.at about the same level of Secret Warriors or slightly less. SW was number 53 on last month’s sales chart. The main reason being, no major characters in this one other than Leonardo Da Vinci. S.H.I.E.L.D.#1 might not sell out initially, but as the buzz builds around the comic, it’ll become harder to find, mainly due to low orders. It was certainly nice of DC to cancel their Shield series just in time for this one to begin. Hey, don’t they currently have a Nemesis series as well.

Solcitation: A four- issue hard-boiled noir crime thriller with girls, guns, fangs and aliens. New York, 1929. The height of prohibition. The cops turn a blind eye while the mobs run the city, dealing in guns, girls and illegal liquor. But the arrival of the mysterious Dragonmir Family from Eastern Europe with more of a taste for blood than booze coincides with a series of brutal attacks on the gangsters themselves. As the gangs fall before the fangs, only handful of mobsters survive. But an unlikely alliance formed between tough guy Eddie Falco and a character from a long way from New York City—a long way from Earth, in fact—offers the humans a glimmer of hope. As the strong-willed young reporter Susie Dale from the Gotham Herald tries to survive in the middle of the maelstrom, and an ancient prophecy unfolds, no one can guess who’s going to win the battle for this particular slice of Turf.

Written by Jonathan Ross; Penciled by Tommy Lee Edwards; Covers by Duncan Fegredo, Jim Steranko and Tommy Lee Edwards.

Why it’ll go fast: The name Jonathan Ross might not mean much to you and I, but the Brits know him pretty well. According to his bio:

“Jonathan Ross is one of the highest profile broadcasters in the UK. His weekly talk show, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross is entering its 11th year on BBC1, and is the UK’s most successful comedy talk show. It is now broadcast via the BBC in the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and in assorted other weirdly arbitrary territories. He also hosts an award winning weekly radio show, the BBC’s flagship Film review program and the Bafta Film Awards, which is shown in numerous countries around the world.”

I guess this would be comparable to John Tesh writing a comic book. Basically, this means the bulk of the Turf #1 shipment is probably going to British comic shops. Most American retailers will probably order a couple of these and be content to let Turf #1 sell out. It might not be a bad idea to pick a couple up just incase they start to really sell across the pond. There certainly won’t be any re-orders available.

————————————–

It must be October because the Marvel Zombie Variants are back. All month Marvel will be releasing Zombified variants of several of their regular monthly titles. Most of the Variants seem to be shipping 1:10 so expect to see prices in the $7 to $10 range. The Marvel Zombies aren’t the only monsters on the stands this Wednesday. It’s a great week for comic horror. Between 28 Days Later, The Anchor (BOOM Studios), BPRD, Hellboy (Dark Horse), Blackest Night Batman, House of Mystery Halloween Annual (DC), Angel, Clive Barker’s Seduth, Life Undead (IDW), Astounding Wolf Man, Perhapanauts Halloween Spooktacular, Walking Dead (Image), The Marvel Zombies 4 and the Mephisto VS Hardcovers (Marvel) and We Kill Monsters (Red Five). As I said, a few horror titles this week. One would think it was almost Halloween.

Thoughts on the stack: I’m not going to lie to you here, Nomad #2 and Web of Spidey #1 may very well end up on my pile. I’m just not sure yet, and I’m buying a crap-load of comics as it is. Twenty comics in one week? That’s ridiculous. And I ain’t no mommy blogger getting my reviewed items for free. No sir, Mr. Federal Trade Commission Officer. I’m paying for every issue. True, I get a discount for working at a comic shop, but it’s that or prostitution. I wonder what Sean McKeever, writer of Nomad, thinks of me considering selling my body to afford his comic. I should Twitter him . . . Anyway; it’s been a while since we’ve seen an issue of Godland and I’m just thrilled it’s not cancelled. Just in time for Halloween comes the House of Mystery Halloween Special, and I’m a fool for holiday specials. Even the crappy Christmas ones. Oh, and Magneto is back this week, too.

Speculator Picks of the Week:

This is the part where the comic swami calls his shot and picks out three titles that could sell out very quickly. Buy them now at cover price or pay twice as much later.

Solicitation: Holy warrior, unholy war. Freak of nature, beast of burden, hulking outcast, medieval prize fighter, Viking raider . . . God’s own leg-breaker. One thousand years ago a hulking outcast sought refuge in the crumbling ruins of an ancient monastery and offered in return the one thing he had to give—his fists. Transformed into an immortal warrior monk standing at the gates of Hell itself to keep our world free from its invading armies, The Anchor is mysteriously tricked into centuries of slumber. But today, this holy warrior rises to battle all the unholy monsters unleashed during his slumber.

Cataclysmic action, quirky humor, and profound pathos for fans of Hellboy and The Goon. A new Boom! ongoing series, brought to you by Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist Phil Hester (Green Arrow, Swamp Thing, The Coffin, Firebreather, The Darkness) and fan-favorite artist Brian Churilla (Rex Mundi, The Engineer, Creepy).

Why it’ll go fast: Three reasons; great writer, great story and great artist. Oh, and it’s another well-hyped release from Boom Studios that, like the others before it, will be under-ordered and hard to find as soon as nerds start screaming about this title on the net. Boom has a series of hits on their hands with Irredeemable, The Unknown and next, The Anchor. It’s the Goon meets Hellboy with Hulk-like action. What more could a nerd ask for.

Deadpool: #900: Marvel Comics

Wait, has it really been 900 issues . . . ? Who cares! If this collection of octane-infused stories by some of comics’ hottest talent doesn’t make you want to genuflect at the Altar of Wade, nothing will. Thrill as the Merc with a Mouth squares off against probe-happy aliens, trigger-happy mimes and one seriously unhappy fanman—and that’s just half the book! Wince as Wade bares his soul (and lots more) to a shrink who’s got major squirrels in his own attic. Thrill as he travels around the globe and then some to settle a childhood bet. And chill as C.S.I. investigators at a blood-splattered crime scene attempt to piece together why this particular “unsub” needed battery cables, Crisco oil, three stacks of adult magazines and a live chicken to pull off the hit.

Why it’ll go fast: All things Deadpool seem to flying off the comic shelves. For now. I’m calling my shot here; there’s no way DP can support three titles a month. Come on, even Wolvie only has two. Well not counting Wolvie First Class, which will be cancelled soon. Here’s the deal; $4.99 for a title partially penciled by Rob Liefeild, who created this character, is going to seem like a lot of money so I don’t see retailers ordering as heavily on this as they have been the regular Deadpool series. Five-dollar comics are scary to order, so the thinking will be order light, sell out and re-order. Which will cause the initial sell out followed by the panic for reorders and ultimately higher prices.

Why it’ll go fast: Magneto is back, Matt Fraction is the hottest writer in comics right now, the Nation X storyline begins here and, Magneto is back. Uncanny X-Men has no trouble selling but this issue, specifically, is going to sell like mad. Because, like I said, Magneto is back. Okay, I admit, this is the “gimme” of the week. You try writing a comic speculation blog every week.

Nerdy Question of the Week

Okay, I read the e-mails, and yes, I forgot a Nerdy Question of the Week for the last couple blogs. Sorry. I blame the booze and procrastination. But without further ado…

This January DC is bringing back eight different series for one more issue as part of the Blackest Night bi-month. I freaked out when I saw James Robinson was doing one more issue of Starman. If you could have any cancelled or ended DC series back, same creative team, same numbering what would it be? This may be a shocking answer to those who know me, but I think I’d pick Aztek.

Superman Batman #1 third reprint

Before we begin, a quick word on additional printings: I was e-mailed last week by a relatively new collector asking me why second-printings of certain comics were worth more than some first prints? It’s a good question. For the most part first-printings will always be worth more than other printings, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Occasionally, companies will release a second-printing of a comic with a new cover that collectors just can’t resist.

The third-printing of Superman Batman #1 is an excellent example. Depending on which guide you consult, this comic guides for $10-$18. I would guess it probably sells closer to the $10-range, but the point is this third-printing guides for $4-$10 more than the first-print. Why is this? The series was very popular at the time—issue #1 was the third-highest selling comic of August 2003—and the first-printings sold out almost instantly. By the time DC went to a third-printing of issue #1, demand had settled down considerably. The first printings shipped more than 130,000, so I would guess the third-print run numbers at no more than 50,000, a number that could be high. Finding the info on older print-runs can be very difficult, and if anyone out there can help me with hard numbers, I’d love to hear from you. The point is, the third printing was limited in it’s print run, and therefore, years later, is very hard to find. And because the series was popular, it’s worth more than the first-printing. Keep in mind this isn’t always the case. If no one cares about the series, chances are no one will care about the other printings of said series. Also, and correct me if I’m wrong here, but I think this was one of the first times I remember a comic company giving different covers to different printings. Like I said, I’m not positive here, and please correct me if I’m wrong.

Now, on to business: It’s the day after Saint Patrick’s Day, and if you’re like me, then we’re both calling in sick to work due to a hangover worthy of an extended hospital stay. What a perfect excuse for reading new comics. With that said, let’s take a look at the new comics coming out this Wednesday, March 18. Below you’ll find the list of new comics I’ll be adding to my collection. For a complete list of this week’s comics click here.
Azrael: Death’s Dark Knight #1 of 3
Batman and the Outsiders #16
Dark Avengers #3
Punisher #3
Supergirl #39
Uncanny X-Men #507
Wolverine #71
X-Factor #41
X-Force #13
Thunderbolts #130
X-Men: Kingbreaker #4 of 4

The only real new addition to my list this week is the Azrael miniseries, which you can read more about in my Speculator Picks below. I’m still very happy with the new Punisher series, regardless of the $3.99 price tag, which still has a lot of collectors moaning. The final issue of X-men King Breaker hits the stands this week and I have to say it’s been a lot of fun. The story is a lead-in to the “War of Kings” event that started two weeks ago. Issue #1 of War of Kings might still be available at some comic shops, but the comic is already getting hard to find; there isn’t even very many up for auction on eBay currently.

And now, on to the Speculator Picks of the Week. These are books that, for one reason or another, may sell out quickly and become instant collectibles. If you don’t pay attention and get to your local comic shop in a timely fashion, you could be paying way too much for these comics very soon. The codes you see listed below the solicitations are for use when ordering through your local comic shop.

And in return, he was given a suit of sorrows, a quest for redemption and a new name. He is Azrael, avenging angel for the Order of Purity and a new protector for Gotham City’s troubled times. But who will protect the citizens from him? Guest-starring Robin, Nightwing, Talia and the League of Assassins, this miniseries runs alongside BATTLE FOR THE COWL and features the dramatic presence of a strangely familiar, troubled hero with two things on his mind: crazed vengeance for the wrongs he has suffered and salvation for the sins he continues to commit!

Why it’ll go fast: Maybe I’m biased by my love of all things Dennis O’Neil (Azrael’s Creator), but I feel like Azrael still has an audience. I loved the character, monkey DNA and all, and love what writer Niczea has been doing in the Bat-titles. Unlike myself, I can’t see retailers having the same sunny disposition towards Azrael that I do. The character was a B-list Bat-character at best, but this is not the old Azrael. In interviews, Nicieza has stated that this is a new character wearing the Azrael armor. For those of keeping score, Jean Paul Valley, the original Az, died in the final issue of the 1990s Azrael series. New Azrael, new armor, and what is destined to be a pretty hard comic to find if the orders are as low as I think they’ll be.

Why it’ll go fast: Thunderbolts #129 checked in at number 31 on the top 300 comics sold for February 2009, selling 45,401 issues before reorders. With that number in mind we can figure that about 3,025 of the 1:15 variants shipped, making the variant cover of #129 pretty rare from day one. If the same numbers ship of issue #130, which could actually be slightly higher due to the fact that the story crosses-over with Deadpool #8 (which probably should have been a “Pick” two weeks ago), then we can expect about the same number of variants. Now, the fact that the variants of issue #129 and #130 fit together to form a larger picture is very cool and may create even more demand and value for the comics when sold together. Personally I’m already regretting not picking up the #129 variant.

If we use these numbers to figure how many of the 1:50 variant of #507 will ship, we get about 1,433 variants. Not a lot, making this comic rare and pricey. Most comic shops will probably be asking for between $20-$40 each for this variant. I wouldn’t pay anymore than $40 for this variant. If your shop is asking for more, it just means they’re greedy and you can probably get a better deal elsewhere. It’s the pricing of these comics that put them out of reach of most collectors and can kill the value of the comics down the line. It’s never fun to pay $50 for a 1:50 variant comic only to find it guiding for $20 later on. Variants can be a tricky thing to collect, so watch yourselves and pay attention to the initial price tags.

Nerdy Question of the Week:

The monthly Superman comics have been fantastic as of late and look to be getting even more interesting by not featuring the Man of Steel at all. While Superman is off planet for the next year in the pages of Superman: New Krypton, Nightwing (not Dick Grayson) and Flamebird will be holding down Action Comics, while the new Guardian and Mon-El star in Superman. So, are you reading the Superman comics, even in his absence, or is DC out of their mind taking the big-blue-boy-scout out of his own comics just as they are hitting their stride and sales are rising? Discuss!
