HONG KONG – The Allen Berk lifetime collection of rare Chinese and Asian banknotes will kick off a three-day numismatic and philatelic auction set for Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Harbor Plaza North Point Hotel.
The collection sale, hosted by Archives International Auctions, will include more than 1,000 lots of rare and highly collectible Chinese, Asian and world banknotes, coins and stock and bond certificates.
This Hupeh Government, 1904-issued banknote, the centerpiece of the Allen Berk Collection, will head to auction in late January in Hong Kong.
Auctions held on following days, conducted by Dynasty Auctions Company, Ltd., will feature a small portion of the Hamtramck collection of Chinese stamps and postal history, which has been unsold for more than 40 years.
The centerpiece of the Berk collection includes a spectacular example of a 1904 Hupeh Government Cash Bank note of high-grade rarity.
“Additionally, there are over 800 lots of Chinese and Hong Kong banknotes, coins and scripophily, with many rarities and discovery notes offered for the first time,” said Dr. Robert Schwartz of Archives International Auctions.
Featured item of sale is a 1666 Swedish Stockholms Banco, Daler Sylvermynt issue banknote, one of the first paper-money issues in the Western world. An example in lesser condition sold earlier this year in Europe for more than $30,000. Estimates of for this item range from $25,000 to $50,000.
Rare coins will feature a 1912 Japanese one-Yen coin, graded MS 66 Gem, and a 1934 Chinese $1 L&M-110, Y345 high-grade and toned junk dollar.
Additional lots of Berk collection auction include a large group of rare-specimen banknotes from American Bank Note Co.; more than 35 lots from the People’s Republic of China; Hong Kong banknotes including Mercantile Bank of India, 1936-1941 issues; and more than 100 worldwide and Asian banknotes from Macau, Japan, Laos, Indonesia, Mali, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Norway, South America, and Mali, including a rare 1955 Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China banknote.
