Celia Lopez Hand Made Mata Ortiz Pottery Butterfly Vase Rare

Revival of an ancient art form. This all started with Juan Quezda who found ancient pottery fragments in the Paquime' Casa Grande Ruins in the 70s. Many fragments were about 1,000 years old from about 1060 to about 1340. This started the revival of the pottery in his village-Mata Ortiz.

The pottery is made using natural pigments and earth. The painting is done with horse hair or childrens hair. The pottery is fired with cow chips, wood or leaves.

This is an exquisitely beautiful pot created and signed by Mata Ortiz potter Celia Lopez.

The butterfly pattern is stamp etched and is extremely wonderful. The clay itself is hand formed without a potter's wheel and is very thin and superb.

I spent part of February in Mexico looking for the very best Mata Ortiz signed pieces.

This is the only piece I have from Cecelia Lopez and it is a rare find.

The black yarn ring is actually a hand made fired clay ring hand wrapped with yarn, on which to place the pot.
