This is a great piece of old ephemera in several ways, first of all it a great example of 19th Century Satirical humor, done very much in the style of and with the humor of Political Cartoons of the Era, secondly, it is a great example of 19th Century Engraving. It is as well done as Real money, checks or bank notes from this era would have been. The humor is throughout the piece and takes awhile to see some of the subtle and not so subtle humor. It was issued on "Swindleville Ave" and is Redeemable now, in nothing, and by nobody" and the one vignette just shows Uncle Sam churning them out. They did date this July 24, 1880 and this exact date is probably as made up as the rest of this item but I do think that this piece is circa that date and from the 1880s era. The style of the piece, the quality of the work, the type of paper also indicate that this is a circa 1880s piece. This item measures approx. 8"x 3". This item is on quality but very thin frail paper. It has normal expected wear and some creases w it was folded and put away at one point (it may have been put in a wallet with real money at one time when it first made and used for practical jokes). t is a center crease and some separation is starting on the bottom and approx .5" into this piece. I consider this item in overall good condition especially for its age and the frail nature of the paper. If I were keeping this item I would probably frame it, or put it in a sturdy holder. that would preserve it and it would present well. I am sure that not many of these survived, so I am pleased to offer this rare example for consideration.
