4th New Hampshire Infantry, organized in Manchester and mustered in 9/18/61, moved to Washington, D.C. 9/27 and thence to Annapolis, MD 10/9/61, attached to Sherman's South Carolina Expeditionay Corps as a part of Wright's 3rd Brigade, moved to District of Florida, Department of the South 3/62-9/62, joined 10th Corps and moved to Beaufort SC 9/62-4/63, 10th Corps U.S. forces at Folly Island to 7/63, 10th Corps Folly Island, SC to 7/63, Morris Island, SC till 1/64, District of Beaufort to 2/64, Foster's Brigade District of Florida till 2/64, back to Beaufort, SC till 4/64, 10th Corps, Army of the James to 5/64, 18th Corps to 6/64, 10th Corps till 12/64, 24th Corps to 3/65, 10th Corps Department of North Carolina till muster out in 8/65, particpated in expedition to Port Royal, SC, captures of Forts Walker and Beaureguard, and Port Royal Harbor, duty in Florida, duty around Beaufort, actions at Caston and Frampton's Plantations, siege operations against Morris Island, siege operations against Forts Wagner and Gregg, siege operations against Fort Sumter and Charleston, capture of Forts Wagner and Gregg, return to Beaufort, Florida, then Beaufort again, Butler's operations against Petersburg and Richmond, capture of Bermuda Hundred and City Point, Drury's Bluff, Battle of Cold Harbor, siege of Petersburg, Mine Explosion, New Market Heights, Chaffin's Farm, expeditions to and capture of Fort Fisher, capture of Wilmington, advance on Kinston Goldsboro, mustered out 8/23/65, in Petersburg Mine the regiment lost 6K/35W/10M, throughout entire service lost 4 officers and 93 men killed. Partial two page letter written in ink by Leander Harris to his wife Emmy on ruled paper with embossed seal in upper left corner, bottom of page is torn off affecting text on front of letter, this letter mentions the Port Royal Expedition which met with a setback on its way to Cape Hatteras when it ran into a storm on the night of Nov. 1, 1861, numerous steamers and transports were lost, Union - steamer in the Port Royal Expedition which carried army stores but no troops, this boat was run ashore during the gail of Nov. 1, Peerless - an army transport which was laden with stores went down in the gail, the crew was rescued, Ben De 'Ford - army transport which was also used by General Banks during Fort Fisher expedition, Baltic was also an army transport (later used in Fort Fisher expedition), Governor - old steamer never meant to go on the open ocean which carried 600 marines designed as a rapid strike force during the capture of the forts, this vessel foundered and sank during the storm and the marines and crew were rescued by the Sabine.(Port Royal Expedition, Nov. 1, 1861)T were 8 men killed on our side (official reports list 8 killed/23 wounded in the bombardment of Forts Beauregard and Walker at Port Royal off Hilton Head in the approach to Beaufort, S. C.)I intended to have finished on that sheet but could not make room. I have not seen Hall but our Quarter Master told me that they did not go on the Union but on the Ben De'Ford and that is The Union went ashore on the coast during the gale, also the Peerless.I believe that I did not mention that our steamer was on fire in the night of the storm, but we did not know it till the next day.It is impossible to get stamps so you will have to..(bottom torn off page)....in, but you must think of that next time.The certificate that Mr. Bidway wanted I sent from Annapolis. I suppose you have received it before this.You must get Annie's sled mended before the snow comes, but I suppose that that will come before you get this.Thanksgiving day you must eat a good piece of pie for me. Give my love to everybody in N.H. that you can whether I ever saw them or not. I must finish now but will write in a few days.
