WELCOME Thank you for visiting! At the beginning of the 20th century Bohemia was a member of the Austrian Empire. After WW I, in 1918, Czecho-slovakia declared its independence. The new republic had three states: Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia. Popular Tomas Masaryk became the first president. In October 1938 the Nazis occupied the Sudetenland (an area along the frontier with Germany, named for the mountain chain in the area) with the acquiescence of Britain and France, after the infamous Munich Agreement. In March 1939, Germany also occupied Bohemia and Moravia. Slovakia proclaimed its independence as a Nazi puppet state. After World War II, in 1945, Czechoslovakia was reestablished as an independent state. In the 1946 elections, the Communists secured the most seats with 36% of the popular vote and formed a coalition government. In 1948 the Communists staged a coup d'etat and Czechoslovakia became a Communist country. In the 1960s Czechoslovakia enjoyed gradual liberalization under the reformist general secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, Alexander Dubcek. This short period was crushed by a Soviet invasion in August 1968. In 1969 Dubcek was replaced by cadre Gustav Husak; Czechoslovakia remained in the Soviet hegemony . The government resigned in 1989 after demonstrations known as the Velvet Revolution. Lawyer-playwright Vaclav Havel was elected president of the republic. At the end of 1992 Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic (Bohemia and Moravia) and Slovak Republic (Slovakia) , an action called the Velvet Divorce. Regardless of the politics, name of the region or the nation, or the political ideology extant, the folks of this area have a powerful history of artistic conception, design and execution that continues to this day. What an impressive presence this antique vase has! It is ten inches tall, with a diameter at the shoulder of about seven inches and a mouth of four inches width. The vase was made by Amphora in 1905, when it was an Austrian enterprise, as documented by the mark stamped underglaze in teal ink on the base. The only other mark is a stamped incised number "6217" also on the base. The exterior is a matte finish light khaki in color with random threads of blue distributed throughout. There are two large blue flowers with associated greenry on one side. I don't have a clue as to the variety, I only know roses and carnations. By subtraction, I'm pretty sure it's not edelweiss since the song says they are white. If you know and care to share, I'll post and give you full credit! The condition of this vase is near perfect. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or crazing identifiable. There are a few glaze pops in the fields of blue on the flowers, but all covered completely. The interior is perfectly clean except for a little accumulated dust--it obviously has been only a cabinet piece. I purchased this at the travelling annual meeting of the Czech Collectors Association in Indianapolis on 12 June 2010 when they held a fund-raising auction for the organization. The members of this group are very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend you seek them out and join the group if you have any interest in collecting decorative arts from Austria, Bohemia, or Czechoslovakia. They are a rich source of information.
