Oldcoinman Ancient Coins "Selling ancient coins on Ebay since 1999" Lot of 10 Uncleaned Ancient Roman Bronze coins Fast and International Shipping What exactly are uncleaned ancient coins? These are ancient bronze coins, usually Roman, that were buried for safekeeping by people in the Balkans 1800 years ago. There were no banks in those times so people simply buried what was valuable in the ground. With the advancement of metal detectors the coins now can be located and are made available. What era are these coins from? These coins usually date to the late 3rd and 4th centuries. Much more rare are ancient Greek coins that date as far back as the second century BC. What size are the coins? The coins will range from about 18-19mm (about the size of a dime) to 10mm. I fill each order with an assortment of sizes depending upon the coins I receive. No one gets all larger or smaller coins. Will all the coins be identifiable? No, these coins are covered with dirt and I have no idea what is under almost 2000 years of dirt. I do try my best to toss out the obvious slugs and broken coins. This is a bit like a archeology hunt, sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised and other times the coins are too wore or the Latin too unreadable to tell much at all. Is there any chance of a gold or silver coin? In all my years of selling coins and talking to other sellers, I know of only one time that an actual gold coin was found and was a medieval gold coin in really bad shape and that was at least 10 years ago. Beware of any uncleaned coin sellers that advertise "gold found", it is obviously too good to be true. Once a year or so, I do hear from customers who have found a silver coin, usually it is a Roman denarius, and usually it was heavily encrusted and it slipped through the people that sort the coins in Europe. Can I find a coin of any value? Actually yes, there are so many variations in the sizes and and minting of the coins that it is possible to discover a very unique coin. In 2004 a buyer who preferred the tiniest of coins found a very scarce 9mm coin of Johann, an obscure emperor and the coin later sold for almost $700 . Are the coins hard to identify? That all depends on how much detail is on a coin. If you get lucky and are able to read all or a portion of the Latin letters in the legends that circle the coins you may be able to identify the exact Emperor. Many times you have less than that to work with and there are many online websites that you can use to help your research. Best is to soak the coins in distilled water and then from time to time scrub them with an old toothbrush or a soft brass brush. Others choose to soak the coins in olive oil and take them out to scrub them. The harder dirt deposits can be picked away with plastic or bamboo picks. Some people buy inexpensive dental picks off Ebay and use those. The extremely encrusted coins can sometimes be cleaned with electrolysis. There are some coins that just cannot be cleaned, after you get under the initial layers of soil you find that the chemical reaction between the soil and the coins have embedded deposits into the coin.
