$100 Confederate States loan form with full tab, February 17, 1864. The form measures 14 inches by 6 inches. There are many folds and pinholes. However, the form is very clean with bold printing. Towards the end of the war, as the Union Army advanced into the south, funds to continue fighting were scarce. To raise money, the Confederate congress recognizing the devaluation of its currency passed "An act to reduce the currency and to authorize a new issue of notes and bonds". This form was one of the "notes" authorized by this act. This type of form is known as an "indented" form. The form was filled out by hand with the name of the person loaning the money, the date and the serial number on both sides. The note was then cut in half along the intricate design to the left, often with a way cut. When the note was presented for interest or redemption, both sides were matched to determine that the note was authentic and not a counterfeit. Reportedly, due to the way the war was going, very few people loaned the government large amounts of money suchas $100. Very few of thse high value loan notes were issued.
