For 1 Day Auction is an OUTSTANDING example of a WW2 Japanese General Officer Dress Sword - Tortoise Shell Grip Full Dress Backstrap! This is a very nice example of a parade saber as worn by a high ranking Japanese Army General during WW2. According to "Swords of Imperial Japan - 1868-1945" page 27, by Jim Dawson, this is a General Officer's sword. "Japanese Military and Civil Swords and Dirks" page 37, also illustrates a sword, not quite as nice as this one, and also pronounces it to be a "very rare 1875 pattern Army General Officer's Grade Parade Saber". Sword with scabbard is 32 1/2" long overall, with a blade length of 25 1/2". Bronze d-guard handle has the full-dress backstrap with high-relief floral design. Some gilt wash finish remaining. The grip is covered in tortoise shell - this is not a painted faux finish. The handle fits very tightly with no rattling - unusual for these old sabers. Still has the original leather washer at the base of the blade and even the original sword bag that it came in!!! The 3 wire wrap is very tight and intact with no chip in the Tortise Shell handle which is hard to find! Blade is in unmolested condition with about 97% original finish with a great wavy temper line! T are no nicks in the blade and it has never been sharpened. Tip is undamaged. Scabbard has single hanging ring. These rarely come read more
