EXCEPTIONAL MUSEUM QUALITY SCULPTURE OF STANDING LORD SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA CARVED FROM SOLID BLACK STONE DATING BACK TO THE 10 th Century AD
--------------------- I am proud to offer this stunning hand carved statue of Lord Shakyamuni buddha standing in a towering pose.. The work is incredibly detailed from his facial features to this body posture as he is so realistically depicted.. . This magnificent work exudes a spiritual presence that is humbling and towers an impressive 2 ft 2 inches tall! This spiritual work has weatd the centuries well as no major breaks or chips mar the piece being wrought of solid black stone however a layer of dust and dirt do cover the exterior of this statue as would be expected with an antique such as this however I believe that this only serves to the charm and character of this rare period piece. When Siddhartha, the Buddha Shakyamuni-to-be, left his father's palace, he gave up all worldly goods and cut off his long hair. As a result, Buddhas are usually shown clothed in the garments of a monk and without jewelry. However, Buddha images created in the service of Esoteric or Vajrayana Buddhism, a later branch of the religion, are sometimes shown crowned and jeweled. Among other things, these adornments emphasize the Buddha's role as a universal sovereign. In this depiction, an ornamented Buddha has been wrapped in an amazingly lavish and elaborate aura of cosmic carvings indicative of his royal past. Pala period is know for some very detailed carving but concentrated in a few segments of a larger piece, Steele, frieze . A close look at the back of the statue reveals a bumpy jagged surface suggesting that this statue may well have once been a part of a larger temple wall from which it was released. -----------------------DIMENSIONS 2 ft 2 inches HEIGHT 9 inches across " AT BASE weighs over 55 lbs ! We encourage the successful bidder to show this to an expert for peace of mind. THIS IS AN EXQUISITE PALA PERIOD LORD SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA THAT DATES BACK TO THE PALA PERIOD CIRCA 10th Century , FROM THE BIHAR REGION OF INDIA. A BRIEF HISTORY OF PALA PERIOD and EMPIREThe vast area of the Pala empire includes some of the most heavily populated regions of the subcontinent. Dominated by the lower courses of two great rivers , the Ganga and the Brahmaputra, it stretches from just east of the Varanasi to the borders of Burma , including the present day-say states of Bihar and West Bengal in India and the nation of Bangladesh from the 8th to the 12th century . The name Pala means "protector" and was used as an ending to the names of all Pala monarchs. Although hard pressed by a resurgent and often dominant Hinduism, Buddhism, with its great monasteries, continued to flourish as now else in India, until the final Muslim onslaughts in the twelfth century. In contrast to earlier periods , it is from eastern India , now, that religious and artistic ideas are exported to Nepal, Tibet and China. From the ninth century onwards, however, the relative peace under the Pala ageis, the wide dissemination for sculpture of the black or grey stone of the Rajmahal hills and the vigorous activity in bronze make the region one of the most artistically productive in all India. The founder of this prodigious empire was Gopala . He was the first independent Bud...
