11 1/2" Early Neopolitan Older Gentleman Creche Figure - Character Face & Glass Eyes
Up for auction is a fascinating unusual early 11 1/2" older gentleman creche figure with a wonderful character face and glass eyes in great condition. As shown in the photograph, this gentleman figure has a note pinned to the underside of the collar on his cape that says "This Figure is one of a collection taken from the Convents recently suppressed in Italy. They were used to illustrate scenes at Festivals and are works of the Middle Ages". This gentleman has a polychromed head, forearms, hands, forelegs and feet. His head is made from terra cotta and his forearms, hands, legs and feet are made of wood. As you can see in the photos, this gentleman creche figure has an exquisitely hand carved character face with brown glass eyes and one tooth - he even has veins showing on his bald head. This creche figure has a stuffed body. His forearms and hands are intricately and delicately carved. He is dressed in brown silk brocade knickers, a silk long-sleeved ecru shirt, a brown silk lace-up vest, a midnight blue silk long-sleeved jacket with laces at the cuffs, a black silk flowing cape and is accessorized with a very old leather satchel that he is wearing around his neck. In addition, he is wearing muslin stockings and leather lace up sandals. The bottoms of his sandals have a hole for his original stand. As shown in the photographs, this fascinating gentleman is in amazing condition with perfect delicate hands and fingers and practically no paintwear. His clothing has only a bit of wear - his black cape has some tattering. This character creche gentleman figure is truly amazing with an interesting note, a fascinating character face, wonderful clothes - all in exquisite condition. He is odor free and from a smoke free home. The stand that this figure is using in the photographs is included in this auction.
