Fenton Glass " Burmese" Appraised By: Leslie Russell History Of Items Fenton Glass Burmese: (Code BR) Burmese is a custard-colored glass with a pink blush. The Burmese color is produced by reheating in a manner the glassworkers called "Striking The Gold" Each piece is formed, stretched and crimped and bent into shape by hand. Then the glass is reheated. The pure gold in the glass causes the uranium based yellow to strike pink. Thus the reheated portions turn the creamy yellow into a pink blush. The formula & art production of this glass was developed by Frederick Shirley of Mt. Washington Glass Co. in 1885. However the cost of production of this type of glassware led the company to discontinue its production in 1900. The formula & technique for producing this color was lost over the years. Fenton chemist Charles Goe was intrigued with Burmese and spent many years struggling to perfect the formula. Finally he achieved success in late 1969. Six items of Burmese entered the Fenton line in 1970. All these pieces were offered with a leaf decal decoration. This line was a tremendous success with the public, thus Fenton added 8 aditional shapes-decorate with leafs an another decoration of hand painted roses. In 1974 six shapes were offered with a handpainted tree scene. The original two decorations phased out leaving only tree scene left into the 1980's. In 1981 an assortment of shapes were offered with a handpainted dogwood design. A special limited edition six piece set was produced for Cherished Editions of Brownville, NY in 1982. According to original ads, the handpainted decoration was inspired by Mary Walrath and consisted of an arrangement of lilies of the valley, forget-me-nots, one rose and a rosebud. The issue was limited to not more than 500 of each piece. A June 1983 supplement featured two Burmese pieces as a part of the Connoisseur Collection. Previously this had been limited to blown items, The bell and epergne were the first pressed items to be produced in this color. The bell was limited to 2000 pieces and the epergne set was limited edition of only 500. More pressed items in Burmese were offered in the 1986 catalog. A handpainted bell was limited to 2500 pieces and the rest of the undecorated assortment was limited to production in 1986. June 1990 a collection of Petite Floral, Trees Scene, Rose burmese and Raspberry Burmese were offered for the 85th anniversary. Sales were limited from May through November. They were marked 85th anniversary. In 1995 t was a 90th Anniversary which artist Martha Reynolds and Frances Burton created unique designs for this series, called Aniversary Historical Collection. In 1997 Teh Centennial Collection incuded a 9" vase with a lilac bud accented summer bouquet design (created by Bacon and signed Bill Fenton) Production of this piece was limited to sales through November 2000, and no more than 2750 pieces. Numerous pieces of plain and decoreated Burmese were also made for special order customers.
