A Brief History of nd's Rothchild Pattern
C onnoisseurs consider the Rothschild Bird oiseaux pattern - first created in 1850 for the Rothschild family of Europe - to be the epitome of hand painting on porcelain. Twelve different motifs portray a 19th century tale about Baroness Rothschild, who lost her pearl necklace in the garden of her Vienna residence. Several days later it was found by her gardener, who saw birds playing with it in a tree. Any décor is enhanced by the Rothschild oiseaux pattern. Characteristic of this pattern is the gardener's playing songbirds. At the center of the pieces, addorned by wavy, gold-painted edges, each pair of songbirds has plumages of blue, yellow, red and mauve shades, perched on a pale-mauve bough growing out of a patch of grass. Scattered around are several meticulously painted flying butterflies and insects, regulars in any formal gardens.
