9' x 12' Arts & Crafts Kermashah Oriental Inspired Whittall Anglo-Persian Wilton Rug Carpet (Circa 1940). This rug is an original, period Whittall wilton rug made in their best quality weave -- the anglo-persian. It measures 248 knots (ends of worsted wool cords) per square inch. The Whittall's moved from England in 1880 to Worcester, Mass (then Worcestor) where they opened their mill in a very small building resembling a school house.They enjoyed most of their success from that time until the great depression and again for the decade following World War 2. They remained in business until the late 1950s. Many of their wonderful rugs remain in good condition today, after 75 to 100 years of use, a true testament to the pride and quality of the guilded age of America's rug industry.Whittall is considered the most recognized name in wilton floor covering. Their product lines included numerous qualities of jacquard woven "wire" wiltons, axministers and even a special line of hand-woven carpets. At the height of their empire, they rivaled the success and fortures of J. P. Morgan. Their highest quality weave, the most superior quality of the entire industry, was established as a household name and their famous "anglo-persian" rugs the envy of every other rug weaving mill in the world.
